Blood Sugar Sex Magik
A great album. To me, the chilli pepper's best. Anthony Kiedis is just asking for sex in this album. Probally the best examples of this are "give it away" and "suck my kiss". On a more sensitive note is where "I could have lied" and "under the bridge" lay. I could have lied for his obvious relation problems as depicted in the song, and under the bridge for his drug addiction.
Track List -
01. The Power Of Equality (4:03) - Not a bad opener. Kiedis's vocals mix nicley with the guitar in the backround, creating a very nice harmonic tune. The pace of the song dosnt really change during it, which I really liked and was a nice change of pace from some other tunes. At the very end I liked the short guitar riff. song rating - 4/5
02. If You Have To Ask (3:36) - What happened here? I really think this song is just a filler... the wierd vocals of a girl (if its not a girl, im truly sorry to the guy that sang it) squealing "if you have to ask". I had to listen to tihs acouple times for how high pitched the lyrics were. the drums create a nice rythm and the guitar at the end really shines, but thats about all this song has going for it. song rating - 2.5/5
03. Breaking The Girl (4:55) - This song begins nice, with a little guitar riff going right into Kiedis's vocals. His singing is just perfecct for this song. The song really isnt loud or obnoxious like most of thier songs, just laid back and more quiet than anything. The harmony in the whole song is quite nice, actually. This song, to me, is underrated. If you pick up the CD deffinatley give this a listen. song rating - 4.5/5
04. Funky Monks (5:23) - Starts out with some "funky guitar" riff's then quickly adds the drums to it. Kiedis's vocals, as usual, match perfectally with the song. I think the guitars and drums could have toned down a bit through the whole thing so Kiedis becomes comprehendable, but all in all still a good song. song rating - 4/5
05. Suck My Kiss (3:37) - To start, the guitar was pretty overpowering in this song. Not a song for the youngin's as it does include numerous sware words... but I doubt any chili peppers fan really cares. Kiedis is basically just asking for sex in this song. If you read the title you could probally guess that. The guitars, drums, and vocals stay with funky monks as being "funky", I guess you could put it. Overall not a bad song. Song rating - 4/5
06. I Could Have Lied (4:04) - Easily put, the best song on the CD(tied with under the bridge). Starting off with low key acoustic riff's then adding kiedis's soft voice is very nice. Then when the drums come in its like the whole package. I think the best acoustic song ever written. ever. The song all in all is about kiedis's relationship problems with his girlfriend. The guitar riff in the middle is a very nice departure from the more laid back tone of the song.... just managing to be a tad less laid back. hah. One of the best chili pepper songs written. easy as that. Song rating - 5/5
07. Mellowship Slinky in B major (4:00) - Going right from laid back to heavier rock. The thunderous guitar hits you right away, then going away from that a bit it goes down into another "funky" beat. Kiedis's voice is sort of hidden by the overpowering guitars. To me, the drums were hardly noticable in this song. Near the middle of the song is where the vocals really start to shine. Not thier best, but not horrible. Song rating - 3.5/5
08. The Righteous and the Wicked (4:08) - Starting off with mellow guitar and drums, then breaking into a 3 or so second pause, then right back into it. The guitar and drums stay the same through the song. Kiedis's partly reminded me of ozzy in some of his vocals, odd as that may seem. Once again, not a horrible song, but I think it may of been a filler... even if it was a filler they pulled it off. Song rating - 3.5/5
09. Give It Away (4:42) - Starting off with drums then going very quickly into some rythymic guitar. Soon after that kiedis comes in with amazing vocals. This was a hti for a reason, being that its just one of those feel good songs. Normally, Im not much for the funk songs but this one really rocked. The drums almost overpower the guitar in this song, which is very rare for the chili peppers, but I like it. Deffinatley give it a listen. Song rating - 5/5
10. Blood Sugar Sex Magik (4:31) - Starting off with bells (dont hate me if im wrong, just what it sounds like). Then going right into guitars and drums, to make a more sexy sounding song. I think the purpose is obvious right when you listen to it.... what it is intended for, anywhey. Excellent song. Song rating - 4.5/5
11. Under The Bridge (4:24) - Another gem in the CD. Tied with "I could Have Lied" for #1 on the CD. Under The Bridge is emotional, singing about kiedis's drug addiction. If you listen to it, it is truly a beautiful song. The guitars are not over powering, nor the drums. The part where it speeds up a tad is nice. The chrous of people in the backround later in the song is a touch that wraps up the beauty of this song. A must listen. Song rating - 5/5
12. Naked In The Rain (4:25) - starting off with a slew of drums, slowly comes in kiedis's vocals and a low-pitched guitar. I think this song was a filler... or maybe it was just because its after Under The Bridge.... but it reall dosnt do anything for me. The pace throught the whole song is the same, staying at another "funky" beat. Some parts where the vocals get higher-pitched do get annoying. S ong Rating - 3/5
13. Apache Rose Peacock (4:42) - starting off with mellow drums and guitar, quickly comes in Kiedis's vocals, which honestly I cant understand in this song. Even if I cant understand him, the way he sings is just relaxing. The whole song is more mellow. Song Rating - 4/5
14. The Greeting Song (3:13) - starting off with guitars, then a quick flurry of drums, after wards comming in kiedis's vocals. The song is more fast paced, which I dont see how it qualifies itself as a greeting song but eh... Song rating - 4/5
15. Mr Lovley Man (4:49) - Another sex song. Obviousley, just by looking at the title again, you can tell he just wants more. The song's guitars and drums make that evident. Once again, the guitars break into "funk" after some normal riff's in the beginning. Overall, not a bad song. Song rating - 4/5
16. Sir Psycho Sexy (8:16) - And we have yet another sex song, how about that. This song, being the longest on the CD just seems to drag on at points. The song isnt horrible, but if they trimmed down the length maybe it would be better. The funk guitar and drums are as evident as ever on this song, mainly because its a sex song again. I think the high-piched vocals then the deep-vocals make the song worse than it should be. Not bad if your into the sex funk thing, but personally im not. Song Rating - 2.5/5
17. They're Red Hot (1:11) - wow.... very fast paced, Kiedis's vocals are extremley hard to understand, and the drums are too fast for the song... overall I think the song is too fast paced. I know there red hot, but seriousley they should calm down...This is just a bad filler and a bad idea for a closer. Song rating - 2.5/5
While I tend to lean more to the ballad side of this CD, I like the thing as a whole too. If you are a fan of any chilli peppers song, pick up this CD! In my eyes, and alot of others, this is the best red hot chili peppers CD made.
