Review Summary: A depressing last effort
From Zero are a metal band from Chicago, Illinois. Their first effort "One Nation Under" was a decent attempt to try to squeeze their way into the Nu-Metal scene. It didn't really work out for them as there was little to no promotion for them and the album was just simply forgettable.
So here we have "My So-Called Life." Very odd choice of an album name. Very depressing really. I think they were trying to appeal to teenagers feeling the same way about themselves. Anyways, the album starts off on an okay note with "Myself." A depressing song about isolation and not having anyone for you in life. Jett's voice is very good and sounds more developed and comfortable here.
Now, for the huge problem with this record. The lyrics are awful and all the songs sound almost the exact same. The Phil Collins cover is pretty trash too. When I said Jett's voice has developed, it did when it comes to melodies. Sadly, he tries to rap and it is just cringe-worthy. It's a last ditch effort to cash in on the rap-metal sound, but it fails terribly.
Musically, the instruments are under produced and are in the back-round of Jett. Which is slap in the face to the rest of the band because it actually seems like they are trying. The guitar work is pretty decent with the occasional fast paced riff that is really impressive. The bass just doesn't exist and the drum work honestly is extremely simplistic and just all around forgettable.
If you're thinking about getting this album, just think again. It's a cruddy album from a decent band. Just get their first one. It's heavier and way catchier. That is if you're into Nu-Metal. Otherwise look somewhere else.
