Coming out of Chicago, Dead Feathers has assembled four incredible tracks for their debut EP. What immediately stands out from the record is the beautifully expansive voice of lead singer Marissa Allen. On all four songs her performance is mesmerizing, ranging from melodically sweet to prophetically tough as she stretches the notes into the band’s musical void. On “Color Exhaustion” the way Allen transitions from fevered murmurs to loud wails is emotionally exhilarating.
Strong vocals are also paired with exciting guitar arrangements. “Night Child” is mystically ominous while “Horses and Sand” provides more stampeding guitar riffs. Moments like that are placed throughout the EP, making the enjoyment of the record that much more intense.
Dead Feathers are often subtly psychedelic with wonderful blues elements intermingled throughout; at times it is like a throwback to classic rock musicians of the 60’s. The best parts of the EP evoke apocalyptic westerns and lost marauders, some doomed, hazy journey soundtracked by those brave enough to witness it.
Dead Feathers EP shows real promise.
