Review Summary: "I wish I could write songs about anything other than death."
When Julien Baker's Sparined Ankle was reccomended to me, I was very skeptical. Female vocalists and singer song writers are something I'm pretty picky with, but everything changed when I heard I heard the title track "Sprained Ankle." This song and the ending track "Go Home" are perfect examples of what makes Julien Baker so special, firstly her lyrics are heartbreaking so emotional and in depth, sharing every bit of herself with the world as she sings these sad somber songs, often revolving around: past lovers, alcohol abuse, depression, self doubt. Just to name a few themes this album tackles, but these songs feel more like entries of Julien's diary more than full fledged songs with very subtle but atmosepheric guitar and at times piano. Julien has a beautiful voice and she uses it full force to drive the final nail in your heart. Julien Baker's debut album "Sprained Ankle" should not be ignored it's lyrical themes and unique style makes this something you can't afford to miss out on.
