No Code was a turning point for Pearl Jam. It was the beginning of the end of platinum selling albums and huge MTV singles. Before No Code, Pearl Jam went platinum 3 times in only 4 years, instantly becoming one of the most best selling and popular band of the time. In the next 10 years, they would only see platinum once with their 1998 album Yeild, which still never amounted to the sucsess of Ten or Vitalogy. So what changed for Pearl Jam in that two year gap that made No Code less sucsessful than its predisessors. For one, former Red Hot Chili Pepper drummer and old friend of Eddie Vedder, Jack Irons replaced Dave Abbruzzese who was kicked out of the band in 1994. Jack Irons shows a unique style on this album, but thats not what makes it so different. Really, Pearl Jam Simply wanted to expand, be creative and try somthing new still not reaching very far out of their traditional style. They could have gone back into the studio and tried to make another Vs. or Ten, but they know better than that.

The album starts with a surprise. Most Pearl Jam albums start off with a mean rocker, but not on No Code. The first song,"Somtimes", is a short, soft and quiet song."Hail, Hail' immidiatly follows as the mean rocker you may have been looking for. The album continues on and you start to see the more creative side I was explaining. Songs such as "In My Tree", "Present Tense", and "Red Mosquito" show this.

Another thing that makes the album unique is the instrumentation. "Smile" uses a bluesy harmonica. Also, "Red Mosquito" features a slide quitar. One of the most surprising things on the album is the song "Mankind". Rather than Eddie Vedder on vocals, Guitarist Stone Gossard sings on this more popish song. Even with this new creativeness, the band members still show awsome instrumentation. Eddie Vedder's amazing voice, Mike Mcready's great quitar work, and Jeff Ament's rumbling bass are all present on this album.

So if you are a fan of any of Pearl Jam's albums, pick this up if you get the chance because it still shows Pearl Jam's amazing song writing ability that is seen on any of thier other albums. Though, if you are not familiar with Pearl Jam and would like to start listening to them, I would not recommend starting with this album. Try Vs. or Yeild because No Code does not reflect alot of Pearl Jam's usual style. Overall, this is a great album and an entertaining listen.

3/5 Great

It was a good review, short but good nonetheless. I actually dont have this album, along with Binaural, but have heard some songs, and it sounded good.

I have all the albums, about 60 of the bootlegs (and fuck everyone they were different enough to warrant that) and i've seen them about 10 times (no small feat for someone in australia) so its safe to say i'm a bit of a fan.

My favourite pearl jam album changes monthly it seems but this is the one that it always comes back to.

the review man was short and poor on detail and description but it read well and gave a good impression of the album

I would have made this a blurb, but i figured it would make more sence to make it a review because I didn't think many people would see it because they got rid of the recent blurbs section on the main page. I know it lacks detail. If I find the time, I might put some more detail into it.
