Review Summary: The bastard child of everything we love about Tool and Opeth combined into one great album that I really liked.
Soen's newest release proves that if tool and opeth had a baby, it would be Lykanian.
I would call the band Toolpeth, or oTool LOL epic!
Lykanian is from the supergroup Soen. if you like superfoods than you'll feel right at home here because with Lykanian you get large dose of many different ingredients. let's go down the list:
-progressive metal
-heavy metal
-progressive heavy metal
on top of that, there's a fantastic Tool and Opeth influence in their sound that can be heard especially in track 3 near the end.
In conclusion Soupergroups are hard to rate, because sometimes the quality varies with each album, if we take a look at Bloodbath you will see the same thing. their best release was their newest one but thats only because they found the right vocalist. Soen doesnt have the best vocalist but he does sound a lot like if tool and opeth had a baby. That would be him LOL epic!
I don't want to give away many of the surprises that can be found on Lakyanian. I will tell you there's a cool drawing of a wolf on the cover but if you look closely you'll see theres actually 2 wolfes. what is the significance of the wolfes? im not sure but with the emotional sound of the music im inclined to believe that it's there to symbolize companionship. like the companionship of the two sounds of tool and opeth.
In conclusion, i really like this newest album from Finland's best supergroup, but there's definitely room for improvement. i'd have liked to hear more variation in the vocal department specifically more screams like All That Remains. I feel like it would open up the band to a whole new audience and their concerts would probably have a lot more energy although i'm too small to go into mosh pits! I'm hoping one day I won't be afraid to try it.
Lakyanian getts a 3.5/5 for me, but i can already feel it growing on me, so in conclusion it gets a 4/5.
thank you for your time.
