Review Summary: Grade-wise, I would give it a B plus, due to one great side and one uneven one. It's darn good, but most Beatles albums are far better. 'Abbey Road' is a two-thirds great, frustrating Beatles album. The entire second side is brilliant, possibly the finest single side of an album ever recorded by a rock band. But side one is where the problems arise. After a fantastic double opening shot of "Come Together" and "Something", you then get four lousy songs in a row. Actually, three lousy and one mediocre. "Maxwell's Silver Hammer" may very well be the worst song the Beatles ever recorded save for "What's the New, Mary Jane ?". Trying to write a child-like, whistle along tune about a serial killer is never a good idea. "Oh! Darling" is mediocre and lyrically abysmal. McCartney's gruff, belt-it-out lead vocal sounds forced and unconvincing, especially when you compare it to the similar style he used on the band's great cover of "Long Tall Sally" and incredibly rocking "I'm Down". "Octopuss' Garden" is a third rate, overly cutesy write-off of "Yellow Submarine". And "I Want You (She's So Heavy)" is repetitive, lyrically inane, and rather irritating in how that doom metal riff goes on endlessly in the final third of the song, although whatever the band is using to give that snowstorm sound effect in the background is rather unique.
Now the good things about the album. "Come Together" is wonderfully funky and shows the band's playing at its tightest. George Harrison does indeed come up with two beautifully melodic songs with "Something" and "Here Comes the Sun". The three-part harmonies on "Because" and "Sun King" are exquisite. And the whole medley section is woven together superbly, with unexpected melodic twists and turns and great group ensemble instrumental work. George Martin really shows up his status as the greatest rock producer this side of Phil Spector on this album. His prowess at highlighting group harmonies and melodic highlights is arguably more noticeable on this recording than any other Beatles album.

"She's So Heavy" rules, agreed. Also, I know it isn't one of their most well-liked songs, but I adore "Octopus' Garden". At any rate, saying it's like "Yellow Submarine" but worse is a shit opinion.

I hate "I Want You/She's So Heavy", and agree with the writer about its repetitive nature. I've never liked "Come Together" either. On the other hand, I've always liked "Maxwell's Silver Hammer" and "Octopus's Garden". Different strokes for different folks. I agree with the writer about Side Two.

"A Day In the Life" is the obvious high point, but it's also because 'Sgt. Pepper' has such great songs as "Lucy In the Sky with Diamonds", "Fixing a Hole", "She's Leaving Home", and the single best lead vocal that Ringo has ever done in his entire career, which just happens to be on another great song in itself - "With a Little Help From My Friends". And when that final piano chord crashes down on "A Day In the Life", it gives you the awe-inspiring feeling that the entire decade of the '60's is slamming down all around you.
It's also better because 'Abbey Road' has minimal contributions from John Lennon, and from the little that he does contribute, only one song from him on the album can be considered great ("Come Together").

Any Beatles song where the lyrics only consist of "I want you/I want you so bad/I want you/I want you so bad, it's driving me mad, it's driving me mad" could hardly be considered one of their top five, let alone one of their best. It gives off the impression that it's a Beatles song for folks that usually listen to metal and have worn out ten vinyl copies of 'Dark Side of the Moon' and 'Led Zeppelin IV'.
