Nirvana were:
Kurt Cobain: Guitar, Vocals
Krist Novoselic: Bass
Dave Grohl: Drums, back-up vocals
there were also some other drummers featured on this cd. I think they were Chad Channing, Dan Peters, and Dale Crover im not too sure though.
Nirvana's cd nevermind was their most known album. It was more radio friendly then the rest of their cd's (except unplugged). Bleach was their loud debut. With only one song that resembled any songs on nevermind: About A Girl. The rest of the cd is full of noise and screaming. Combine the two of these albums and you have this: Incesticide.
This is a collection of b-sides. B-sides are always some of my favorite stuff, because you don't hear them that much.
The vocals on this cd are as I said above either like the ones on bleach or nevermind or both. Not many people enjoy Kurt's voice. Dave Grohl once said: It sounds like he was boiling nails in there. I don't know a lot abpout many grunge bands so I don't know if these are typical grunge vocals or not. But I know that I like them. The vocals aren't all raspy though. Listen to Been a Son and you'll hear Kurt's voice sounding clearer.
The vocals have a lot of angst and anger in them; hence the screaming. Mexican Seafood is an example of Kurt's vocals from the bleach era. Almost uncomprehensible. The creepy mumbles through out Big Long Now are haunting and very catchy.
Kurt was a really great song writer. He had a way with words I guess. A lot of the lyrics on this don't seem to make sense, but if you try you can kind of get the main idea of what he's talking about. Kurt had a troubled soul and bad addictions, this definitley played a large role in his lyrics.
The instrumentation on here is really creative. The guitar has some nice clean riffs but in a second that can change to distortion. One second you can hear the bass playing a nice groove then the guitar takes over with a loud distorted simpl riff (example of this is on sliver). The drums are really great on this. Dave grohl is really great with the bass drum. His beats blend with everything so well. His fills on aneurysm are some really sweet. The bass doesnt get lost in this cd. Theres some really great lines in here. Sliver has some of Krist's best work, and on dive Krist is heard clear as day in the intro (as he's the only playing) and he has a nice fast riff on Downer (which also appears on bleach). On aneurysm he has really great bass fills that a lot to the verse. He's the kind of guy he know when to do what. The guitar is typical Kurt. Theres some noise solos in their, which are like classic nirvana. And there are also some nice solos that arent a huge mess of noise, which can proove to be relieving at some points.
This album ranges from the loudness of dive, hairspray queen, and mexican seafood, to the somewhat clean riffs in the covers they do of The Vaselines and Devo. This can be a pretty dark and nightmarish cd at times. Big long Now really sticks out in my mind when i think dark, creepy, and nightmarish. Everything is just gives you the feeling you're watching some monster hunting down a girl. The more upbeat songs are like Slive, Molly's Lips, Turnaround, and Son of a Gun. The more upbeat moments are kind of what gives this album its balance.
Overall
This album probably isn't for a beginner nirvana fan. I'd say get the best of for just getting into these guys. If you like nevermind and bleach you'll probably like this. This album is an awesome listen. It's probably one of the albums that I listen to the most.
