Nice! I was toying with writing a review for this, but now I no longer feel the need to. Beautiful album, more stripped-down but the lyrics are top-notch, really seems to capture the feeling of the current moment in the USA.

Good review Boney, this is my main listen of the week and usually I’d review but I think this says everything

Thanks both! I definitely could have let this stew a bit longer and included some more detailed lyrical analysis but I figured I'd save that for the thread. This is probably my favorite of Moreland's since High on Tulsa Heat, if not In the Throes, the more electronic sound of his last couple worked quite well but this is definitely the style he's best at.

Yeah I liked the previous one with a bit of a Justin Vernon electro influence but this one is better overall

Two users I did not expect to pop up here! Enjoy, Hawks, this should be folky enough to slot alongside your current list.

One thing I'll say for this, it's super consistent but I do wish it had a couple more tracks that particularly stood out as highlights. But pretty much every song is excellent in its way and there's enough variety that they all feel distinct enough, so it's hard to complain. He's one of the most consistent songwriters out there in this vein. What are y'all's highlights?

Hmmm, my choice cuts at this point would probably be The Future Is Coming Fast, The More You Say The Less It Means, Blue Dream Carolina, and Ain't Much I Can Do About It.

Nice selections Sunny! I dig the guitar in More You Say and the fiddle in Ain't Much. Blue Dream has great lyrics, nice political commentary without being overly obvious or preachy (at least, that's how I interpret it). "Tell me what the truth is, don’t tell me who to be" is a line I'd line to spit at any number of politicians and annoying moralizers on all sides of the political spectrum.

In the Throes and High on Tulsa Heat would be good next stops. Those are most similar in sound to this, Birds in the Ceiling is similar in core songwriting but with a lot of electronics included. Big Bad Luv is a great album with a more “full band sound” and LP5 is a kind of transitional album between that and Birds. You really can’t go wrong though, if you enjoy this then I expect you’ll enjoy pretty much anything he’s done as Doof says. I gotta check more of his early (pre-2013) stuff myself.

Souls are filling up the streets
Burning with a holy heat
But we don’t grieve, and we don’t rest
We just choose the lie that feels the best...

I’m a Louisville slugger
Aimed for the fences
While my oldest defenses keep me down
I give my confession
Without disgrace or discretion
I will torch the kingdom outright, just to hold the crown
Hell of a verse.
