| Atari Not sure if you?re still out there but Versus the World have a new album on the horizon which surprised me! Hope you?re doing well, legend
| Sowing I can't complain, and I'm hoping things are going well for you too. I don't know how I wrote so many of the damn things, although I'm trying to slow down and focus on other things lately. Let me know what you think of the new Emery...I gave it one spin but I was admittedly distracted. It sounded good, from what I could tell!
| Sowing Um hello! I hope you are doing well, we miss you.
| Sowing 'Inevitable'? Yeah, that song is super romantic. My wife and I have like 10 songs we claim are "our song", but that's one of my favorites haha. It's good to hear from you as always; I'm keeping my fingers perpetually crossed for a DaveyBoy return. Maybe some day...one day...
| Sowing I'm sorry to hear about the extensive lockdowns, I hope that at least means you've been able to dodge illness thus far! Everything else has been okay, I trust? I'm good, the wife and I just had our second kid (both boys) so we're currently experiencing those joys as well as how 3 hours of sleep now magically feels like a good night's rest! As for the country music: this is what happens in yours and Irving's absence. I've clearly lost my way. ;-)
| Sowing Miss you bb. Hope life is treating you well.
| Jom Sending you all positive vibes and well wishes!
| Jom Do you set a timer yearly around this time to remember to pop back in for a visit? Ha! Hope you and yours are keeping safe and healthy.
| Waior It's my name! I'm full time in music now, so I wanted to avoid having my name show up on reviews. Glad to see you still check up on things occasionally.
| Sowing glad to see you're still kickin'
| Toondude10 yeah things have been good, hope you've been well
| Sowing Blushing is my #2 album of 2019 and was damn close to being my AOTY. I know it's fairly homogeneous but I adore that romantic, hazy indie pop sound. Pope is possibly the best song on the album, although Colorless and Strange Flower are equally as brilliant.
| Jom HELLO. You can't fool me dropping by and not expect me to ask if you're sticking around for a minute! Hope all's good in your neighbourhood!
| NorwichScene Hi mate, hope you?re well. Unsure if still here, I hope so!
| Atari listen to more music
| Atari Seriously tho, if you slap a 5 on it we may have Emery under best new music
| Atari Haha, the more 5?s the merrier! Nice to see you make an appearance, hope things are going well for you :)
| Toondude10 okay, I have to rec this to you. It's like if Hands Like Houses went a more djent route, but it's ****ing great: https://open.spotify.com/album/11OIOz5a5MgnoDWjI0VoXS
| AmericnZero02 No worries man. Yeah I'm good. My sputnik attendance is waning. I haven't really listened to much this year, definitely not much new stuff. Maybe I'm turning into one of those old jerks who doesn't like any of the new music the kids are listening to, hah. Probably the one band I've discovered lately is In Her Own Words. Their album Unfamiliar is really good, polished pop-punk. Check out "Strangers."
| JustJoe. I'm bad at checking music nowadays as well. I just remember hearing Emery because of your review way back when. Glad you're still around!
| Toondude10 in case you ever come back, I found another band you might enjoy https://open.spotify.com/album/1R7ytxN9DLEd9DTCJki8dj
| AmericnZero02 Hey Davey, hope you're still alive and well out there. Got any new music out there to reco? I've been in a slump trying to discover new bands! :/
| AmericnZero02 Hey Davey, hope you're still alive and well out there. Got any new music out there to reco? I've been in a slump trying to discover new bands! :/
| Sowing ****, sorry to hear. Email me if you ever want to shoot the s*** man. sowingsputnik@gmail.com. And I'm looking forward to that indie-folk record!
| Sowing Hope all is well. Miss you bb
| AmericnZero02 It is! I wish all comeback records were that good. I think it's placed nicely behind Determination as my favorite SOTY record.
| Jom I don't have the money to fly down there and ask, so I'm shoutboxing you instead: are you going to dib an album or two or didgeridoo it already and I missed it?
| Toondude10 glad you like it, been trying to get Sowing to listen to them
| Toondude10 Here's something you might like https://open.spotify.com/album/7uFEipdH6Fb6G7AcSNvbU8
| Jom ... Soen, Nothing But Thieves, Nothing More (I wasn't that big of a fan but it seems like a Davey record), is it cliche to say The Smith Street Band?, maybe PVRIS, I quite liked the new And So I Watch You From Afar (but I also liked 'Heirs', and people hated that record). In a similar vein to ASIWYFA: tricot, Lysistrata. Oh, and definitely the new Menzingers, obviously. TBC...
| Jom Well, the new Propagandhi shreds, so that's my first Davey rec. You might dig that Sorority Noise record, too (same goes for The World Is a Beautiful Place...). If you liked previous Lunatic Soul records (Mariusz from Riverside's side project), the new one is great (a little more electronic flourishes compared to previous records). Another vote for Daniel Cavanaugh's (Anathema) 'Monochrome' record. To be continued...
| Jom I'm working on your list (sorry for the delay, just tragically busy), I promise!
| Jom Hi, friend. For this year?
| NorwichScene Hey bud, hope you're well. Yes, it's currently my new AOTY. So many awesome releases this year
| Toondude10 yo Davey, you ever check out Nothing But Thieves? They're like Muse, but better.
| Sowing Yeah man had no idea they even existed and now they're one of my favorite bands. I love when that happens. So what's your rating for their new album going to be? :-)
| Toondude10 there's also that new Manchester Orchestra album which should peak you interest. Everyone is practically masturbating over it.
| Toondude10 I did rec that band Fight the Fade for you way back when. I still recommend you check them out, they're really good. I also recommend Earthside if you're in the prog rock mood.
| kascetcadettt here's a thread where you can discuss how fantastic it is to be a part of this moment: http://www.sputnikmusic.com/list.php?listid=174557 \\\ don't be scared to share the news with other guys in case i missed someone out and keep shining in the light of this beautiful rock n roll fireplate, god bless, hasanmedia represent
| kascetcadettt sieg hi it's-a me smooth brotha from the umpteenth block taggin' em trainz comin' from your favorite station, word on the street is (artuma is gay) my new album came out recently and if that's the last thing i ever do let it be, leavin' the link in your hands my man: http://poleyounger.bandcamp.com/album/go-daylight \\\ feel FREE to 1 it if u didn't like my agressive self promotion campaign, feel FREE to thank me if this album saved your life
| Sowing Ooh OK I will! Thanks man, it's time consuming but worth the effort! How's life?
| Atari hey man I know it's late but if you're still wanting some 2016 recs I have a feeling you'd really love fossil youth - a glimpse of self joy. been jamming it a ton lately
| Rigma Almost 2016 ratings
| Atari glad to hear it man, always good to hear from you! that tiny moving parts might make my top 10 actually, seems to have a lot of lasting power. I'm terrible at ranking albums because it all comes down to what mood I'm in etc. but trying to rack my brain for a loose ranking of my top 25
| Sowing Check out All Get Out - Nobody Likes A Quitter. Very Manchester Orchestra like, I dunno just seems up your alley and usually when I 4.5 something it's worth a 3 or so from you ; )
| ToWhatEnd So I clicked on an old review of mine and read some of your incredible comments. Appreciated beyond belief. Thanks for all the love. Hope life is good.
| ToWhatEnd I was just trying to keep it 100 ;)
| AmericnZero02 Let me know if there's any new stuff you've found that I need to look into!
| AmericnZero02 I'm still here! (on and off) but apparently am terrible at checking my shoutbox. All is well here! 2016 hasn't been a great year for my music library either. The new Too Close to Touch record was a bit disappointing, but not without at least a few highlights. I've been spinning the new Paper Route record; it's pretty solid. They're alt rock/electronic/pop I guess you could say. The new Drawing North album (another aussie band) is catchy as hell. It's pretty darn poppy though.
| Sowing Thanks for the kind words, ilu bro. Sputnik misses you and I hope things are looking up in life.
| Toondude10 I think I found something you'd like, it's been out for a good while now https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q86UbYIX-EY
| Willie Awesome. It's a really good album, but I can see how it could take a few listens if it's not usually your thing. Cool that you made the effort.
| Jom 1 to what Sowing said. As long as your e-mail is still open I'll buy you the record and send it to your e-mail.
| Sowing :( email me if you need anything at all.
| Sowing yeah when you have ample time I'm sure you'll enjoy it. hope all is well, sput isn't the same without davey reviews
| Sowing yeah dude check bayside like atari saidnew album seems like essential daveycore
| Jom Greetings! Here's my best guess for "You may like"s: Gates (Parallel Lives - check "Left Behind" and "Shiver"); Rival Sons (Hollow Bones - check "Black Coffee" and "Thundering Voices"); PUP (The Dream is Over); Three Trapped Tigers (Silent Earthling); obvious Butch Walker (Stay Gold) recommendation (streaming on Pandora); new blink-182; Thank You Scientist; Polyenso; Bayside; Frameworks; Big Ups. More to come. Hope you're well!
| Atari new bayside was released a week early on apple music if you have it (it rules)
| Atari I actually think you'd love the new tiny moving parts as well! It's a lot more energetic than their past albums
| Atari No problem man, you'll have to let me know what u think about some of those. Cool hearing from u.
| Toondude10 oh an check out that new Thank You Scientist album, I'm pretty sure you'll dig it. There's also the new Hands Like Houses too.
| Toondude10 there's also the new Emarosa album but I didn't really like it.
| Toondude10 new Relient K, not sure how much you're into them but they pretty much fit all of those descriptions. I also recommend Fight The Fade, I'm pretty sure you'll dig them, especially their second album.
| Atari Oh yeah the new modern baseball is pretty good, more accessible than their past stuff. And the new Hotelier is pretty great as well but does have a lot of slow burgers on it (two deliverance is catchy as hell though)
| Atari The new relient k is also pretty good if u like them, and the new blink-182 is bloated but has some damn catchy songs. Trash boat has a pretty decent LP this year too. Hmm what else...there's been some solid EPs: the starting line, can't swim, Aaron west and the roaring twenties, the Ataris. Honestly not a ton of amazing stuff tho, PUP and Direct Hit! are the two major standouts imo
| Atari Hey man, great to hear from u! Ya, I've been on a metal binge but I'll always love pop-punk (nostalgia is a powerful thing). I actually made a pop-punk list in June that has a bunch of my favorites. As far as this year, the new PUP and Direct Hit! albums I reviewed are excellent. The first 2 songs on that PUP album are pretty abrasive so if u don't like them some of the later songs are catchy as hell.
| NorwichScene Hi Dave, I can't think of much either so far this year. One album that surprised me was I See Stars - Treehouse, although doubt its your thing. Modern Baseball - Holy Ghost is awesome
| Sowing Hey man glad to hear from you! They're not necessarily the best from this year, but these are catchy 4's or higher for me: The 1975, The Strumbellas, Weezer, M83. The newest album by each, respectively.
| trackbytrackreviews hey, you reviewd Simple Plan's Get Your Heart On!, have you listened to Get Your Heart On Second Coming? It's a follow up EP to that album
| Atari I do hope it was nothing too serious keeping u away man, but if you ever want to chat feel free - atari857@outlook.com.
| Arcade no need to apologize at all. i've had a chat with Sowing and i have no hard feelings towards anyone; the way i see it, i'll get a promotion when the time comes and its deserved. until then i've just got to do my best to improve and maintain my standards as a writer.
| Atari No explanation necessary man, that's funny I didn't even see you commented on Sowing's post before - was just randomly thinking about how I haven't seen u around here lately. Glad to see you stop by :] I hope you stick around, but either way make sure to take care of yourself dude
| Atari miss your presence around here lately Davey :/
| Sowing It's awesome to hear from you man, and sent you a lengthy reply for you to peruse at your leisure :)
| OwMySnauze That's good to hear! At least it made it to your list! It was definitely a sleeper of the year.
| Jom Your dibbing presence is required at your earliest convenience (please and thank you!).
| JWT155 Hey man, I've always admired your reviews and opinions, I've been here for 6 years and finally found the courage to post my first review in a long time, I'd appreciate it if you took a quick glance and any thoughts or advice you would have on it. Cheers.
| TalonsOfFire Don't let the haters get you down you staff i mean you could just permaban they asses if they talkin' smack bout your taste hahaha
| TalonsOfFire I don't know about that, not everyone is like Artuma if you're thinking of what he said in that thread a little while back.
| TalonsOfFire Aw thought you would still be in the 290s in your reviews and was gonna suggest you do your 300th for black album, could really use a staff rev, especially one who has the perspective of being 5/5
| trackbytrackreviews Yeah I saw that, I was reading the... mini-reviews? and I saw your rating down there; I really like reading your... mini-reviews that you post on the comments. Since there's no review for it and I'm a big fan, I'll review sometime this or next week.
| NorwichScene I'd be very interested to know if Young Guns album made your top 40. It was let down of the year for me
| NorwichScene Just done my AOTY list. I'm preparing for the haters again lol
| Skoop I did not, they kinda remind me of man overboard/handguns, just a bit too corny for me.
| Toondude10 It's a bit more poppy yeah but I still really like it. I think it's better than Odd Soul at least.
| Toondude10 New Mutemath is out, just thought you'd like to know.
| Skoop Ah ok, yeah let me give it another listen. I would highly recommend the new Pentimento album though.
| Skoop What don't you like about it? I thought it was really pretty and I enjoyed the vocals among other things.
| Skoop Uh oh, lemme give it another whirl
| Sowing Well I'll await that announcement, I hope it's not what I think because you're one of the best around.
| NorwichScene Jeez just seen your comments number. I should use Sputnik more lol
| Sowing I don't know about that whole me-surpassing-you thing, you've been a machine lately and I haven't been nearly as active as I have in the past. Not that it matters, lol. Hopefully we are both still around reviewing for a while .
| ASnideReturns The new Coldrain is great, much better production, faster and harder than their previous releases.
| LotusFlower Maybe one or two of the new tracks fall flat, but the rest are all as stellar as the EP. Also the two bonus tracks are godly.
| schoonda A definite departure for sure, however after weapons I feel this has more potential, and is much better as a whole
| Atari I'm the same way man haha. I really don't have many negative ratings at all
| Atari if you just check out 3-4 songs make sure valentine is one of them ;) honestly it's not a fantastic album prolly a 3/5 for me but I just love that song
| Toondude10 really missing Sputnik Discusses rn :-(
| Atari if you haven't heard seasons change - please don't leave I think you'd really enjoy it. pretty similar to state champs - nothing original about them, but catchy as hell
| Sowing It's weird that's the single if his vocal lead is an anomaly...and at the risk of sounding naive/American, should I have heard of California?
| Sowing You're definitely right about how catchy it is; I thought the song was just okay but I haven't been able to get it out of my head for hours after just one listen haha.
| theacademy belatedthanks for the mel rec... good shiiiiit
| Sowing Can't say I've heard of them, but would be willing to give them a chance. Have a song to recommend?
| Arcade saw it on the shelf at work yesterday so bought it there and then, didn't anticipate it at all lol. but yeah, the whole album is indicative of "Let's Go"- that is, flat and pragmatic rewrites of songs they did far better on Hysteria and Pyromania. Joe's vocals are especially s***e : (
| Arcade very unimpressive stuff agreed
| Arcade thoughts on new def leppard?
| Pon Bro I have renounced my metalhead ways I'm all about Joanna Newsom now for I was lost but now am found
| Pon Was it pretty not good? idk I've never voluntarily listened to a DL song -engages flame shield-
| Pon Get the hype train rolling yo it'll be TPAB all over again
| Pon I don't see why not?
| Pon Holy hell, I never realised you had 299 reviews! Got anything planned for number 300?
| JonEthan Would you have any good recs for pop music Davey? I've been trying to get into some older stuff that ain't the Beatles.
| Skoop Ah, ok, well my knowledge with 80's music is sadly lacking, but I definitely wouldn't be surprised if they were stealing melodies. They even seem to copy themselves sometimes (this means war especially sounds eerily similar) I think this one is definitely more over the top to coincide with the Goonies theme I guess.
| Skoop Yeah its kinda overblown and cheesy, but there is an energy level that is missing from most other pop rock bands that makes it more enjoyable for me. And jeez with those hooks I don't know why you aren't running towards it 5 in hand. There's definitely a couple filler songs (Shut up and kiss me and one love) so I may bring it down to a 3.5, but its definitely no 1.5.
| Skoop I think that's part of the appeal for me. Its kinda refreshing to hear the Queen esque harmonies and raw vocal talent in the overproduced pop world now. I also think that they are one of the few pop bands that can be somewhat unpredictable with their song structures and tempo changes but at the same time just very very catchy. I think that they excel in writing catchy pop albums that can be enjoyed as a whole.
| schoonda Given the new No Devotion LP a spin yet?
| elcrawfodor Alright Davey, I'm gonna need some darker female pop along the lines of that Meg Myers album, seriously I can't stop listening to it.
| Skoop It depends on if you enjoyed the first album or not, because it sounds pretty similar. I'm a sucker for just about anything Jonny Craig but the album is kinda generic and long. I wouldn't listen expecting to be blown away, but as a fan of his past stuff I found it pretty decent.
| Toondude10 Introducing a much less s***tier version of Dance Gavin Dance! http://orangesmusic.bandcamp.com/
| Toondude10 how about I give you a song instead? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hKy60ZE7pHo
| Toondude10 They're like neo-prog metal. kinda like Roshloo, Arcane, Haken, stuff like that. Don't know if you're into that but if you are then I'd recommend them.
| schoonda I can't be alone in thinking that they would come back softer than previous efforts. Boy was I wrong.
| schoonda https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PJxGrStt5ws please tell me you're excited as I am for the new Fightstar album.
| Sowing She's great. I the energy in her vocal style. "Here" is brilliant.
| Toondude10 I think you might like this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1VmNTl6JvDY
| Toondude10 Well that's okay, cuz I'm gonna review it. Hopefully before Rowan s***s all over it :-)
| Toondude10 Well it's awesome as usual, just to let you know ;-)
| Arcade dearly missing sputnik discusses :(
| Toondude10 The new Dear Hunter album comes out this week!
| Jom Adding it to the list. Cheers for the recommendation!
| Mort. ahh fair enough. i too am slacking on 2015 releases. anyway, i look forward to their return
| Mort. whatever happened to the sputnik disccuses posts? i rather enjoyed them
| Willie No problem. I really like that Atlas Losing Grip album. I wanted to review it, but never had the chance. You might also try Pyogenesis - A Century in the Curse of Time. The first song might be too 'metal' but I could see you liking the rest. It came out in August in Europe and will come out in September in the US (don't know about Australia).
| Toondude10 Did you ever listen to that new Hey Rosetta! album at all?
| Toondude10 Since I know you like Dead Letter Circus, their new album just came out. But wheeeeeew it stinks.
| Deviant. It's kinda hard to say with you honestly. I'd say it has more luck than most to win you over. It's certainly catchy, in a bedroom producer kind of way
| Toondude10 Yeah their debut album is great. Granted it's not particularly original but the vocals are so good.
| Toondude10 Here you go Davey, just discovered these guys on a lark yesterday: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SuS8RXor0BA
| schoonda Never really got into them, the singles from their debut LP are rad and Bones is just amazing, but for some reason they just didn't click for me. Just listened to rising up, can't say I was too impressed however.
| schoonda interested what you think of the new don broco album. not 100% sold to be honest, but definitely catchy!
| Toondude10 well I guess that's fair enough. which one you think will be next?
| BeneaththeDarkOcean Hey Davey! Listening to that new Sasha Siem, pretty crazy sounds out of that record. You gonna do a review?
| Toondude10 I just remembered, you haven't listened to the new Hey Rosetta! album yet.
| Toondude10 you know, with albums being released on Firday now, how about a discussion? I know I've been rec-ing a lot of these but it's just a thought.
| Toondude10 fair enough, I liked that album a bit even though it's not really original. Has a kind of Muse vibe to it. (At least for me it does unlike Red XP)
| Toondude10 I think you might like this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F4FwMux9Jrw
| Fugue Hah, as if anyone else even remembers who I am :P I'm thinking of giving the FFS album a go actually. You heard it?
| Observer if i am sober enough to vote it will
| Toondude10 yeah that is pretty much my overall opinion of it as well. Right now the average for it is perfect for me. Though the last three songs are great imo.
| Atari just looking out for you cause i know you reviewed their last one - it is slightly underwhelming at first but gets more enjoyable with repeated listens. still, i know he's capable of better and it would be nice if he put out an entire solo album rather than just EP's
| Atari new anthony raneri EP is out if you didn't notice
| Fugue I'm also being worked like a slave IRL, but in return I'm being taken to Germany for the next 5 days so that's pretty exciting I guess. Also kinda maybe feeling a review coming on, haven't really stretched my writing skills in a while - and I've just noticed that like the Nostradamus I am, my prediction of a new Foals album this year was indeed correct! Quite enjoying the blogs btw.
| CalculatingInfinity I do since I follow Botchamania and OSW Review, it had too much of a big impact on my life and I love the dumb s***/complexities in the wrestling industry so much I can't not stay in touch. If you have 2 hours free someday I highly recommend you watch this, OSW reviewed Summerslam 92 which is Davey's biggest moment in wrestling. They reviewed the whole Hulkamania era if you're intrested, hilarious lads: https://vimeo.com/68310381
| CalculatingInfinity Just saw your profile, and British Bulldog picture and reference nice. "There is no bull, in this British Bulldog" ;)
| Mort. no Enter Shikari ratings Davey, that needs to be fixed
| elcrawfodor You said to let you know next time I had a review for feedback, well it's here three months later, concept-album free. I know metal isn't your forte but would appreciate anything you had to say!
| Toondude10 I'll admit I thought it was a little too long at first but then I remembered it's a concept album :P
| Toondude10 Did you listen to that new Dear Hunter song?
| Atari just based on the 2 songs i've heard from the new album, it does sound pretty similar to their last album, but still great. I'm just glad you're reviewing it, they're underrated and deserve some more exposure on sput!
| Atari i see your jamming the new versus the world! you get a promo? on another note, you should check out sorority noise, i think you'd dig
| Toondude10 You know with Breaking Benjamin's new album I just thought of a discussion topic: Reunions! Some of your favorite bands from the past reuniting after a hiatus or break-up and possibly doing new material. I've got a couple of bands I can think of (*cough* Tool *cough*).
| Toondude10 Yeah I'll admit it's probably their weakest since their debut. It has a few pretty good songs though.
| Toondude10 Dear Hunter song came out http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x2u1i7e_the-dear-hunter-a-night-on-the-town_music
| Toondude10 Did you ever listen to this yet or is it still on your "delayed" list? https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL-XbTEkQt3TZO1wznlyvZpbotymY6PDvy
| Atari Sounds good man! Funny enough I was gonna tell u the other day u should review there new album haha. Seems like it was forever ago they announced homesick/roadsick honestly.
| Ecnalzen Sometimes, I think I am just a sucker for Gustav's singing voice, and I probably won't ever really dislike anything the do purely for that, ha ha. They pretty much went straight pop/rock on here, but I still think it turned out fine. It's even more stripped down musically than Bones was from Kings. They were going for the hooks, I guess. SwS have some fun stuff, but I just can't handle that dudes singing voice.
| Ecnalzen I just noticed the new Young Guns has been getting crapped on a bit here, so I was curious what you thought of it. I def don't think it's better than their first two, but I still really like it, and I'm glad they haven't tried to make the same album twice yet.
| Ecnalzen Have you heard new Young Guns and/or Emery, yet, Davey?
| paradox1216 Oh man I concur with atari do the silverstein discographyBut anyway I'm here to say that you calling me Double D reminds me of my elementary school days :D so nostalgic lol
| Atari how have you not heard silverstein's discog srsly
| Toondude10 Kerrang! gave it a 5/5 and it's at an 84 on Metacritic last time I checked.
| Toondude10 Lol, well I'd consider it, half-hype or something. After all it is on the trending list :P
| Toondude10 found a stream for Drones if you're interested: http://www.goldenmp3.ru/muse/drones
| Sowing Huh that is weird. I figured you weren't into her enough to dl a leak but cool!
| Sowing New Zella Day is out. I think you'd like it. Because you're me.
| Toondude10 Also I haven another idea for a discussion (I'm practically throwing them at you :P), how about local bands? Not just small time bands that you've seen/heard at a concert some 20 years ago, although they're included, but even famous bands that I'm sure most people on the site will know about.
| Toondude10 ah, okay. That's a good topic to do I guess. I do enjoy me some acoustic songs every now and then.
