A man and a panda manage to make some unreal music that is beyond the realms of creativity.

What a couple of goons these two are. I mean really, who do they think they are, mixing folk pop and noise? Visionary? Or the result of a few acid tabs too many? I don't know, but whatever the case may be, Spirit They're Gone is quite the listen. With layers of delicate noise put over lovely folk pop compositions, the experimentation is definitely nice. The vocals don't seem to rise up from the level of the noise too often, but they don't have to, almost acting as another sheet over the acoustic guitar and twirling pianos. The drumming, as you probably already know, is excellent. No surprise there, but one still can't help but be taken aback at the skill displayed on closer "Alvin Row". And yet, for all of this, the best track on the album was one created years beforehand, known as "Penny Dreadfuls", which is a beautiful, affecting piece in all respects. Animal Collective would grow after this, both in persons and in scope, but their roots cannot be forgotten, especially when they're this unique and lovely.

Freak folk? New Weird America? Whatever the hell it's meant to mean, Animal Collective perfected it immediately on their first album, Spirit They're Gone, Spirit They've Vanished. While the only members present here are Avey and Panda, the lightly brushed drum fills on every song they're featured on, the off-the-cuff vocals Avey delivers, programmed bass, and general free flowing form of every song here show AnCo working at their bests, even though they weren't even fully formed as a band yet. Definitely a sound of things to come for a band that's only two consistencies are that each of their albums are excellent, and yet never the same.

This album did what several AC albums after this failed to do. It let me have fun with it. Unless we're talking about Feels or Painting With, I don't really have fun with AC albums. However, the entirety of Alvin Row is beautiful. Chocolate Girl is simple, but still energetic at times. My favorite track on here is Untitled.
This is one of the five AC albums that I truly love.

A truly dazzling pop album with swirling melodies and nostalgia of childish wonder and adventure. One of the most creatively refreshing albums I've ever heard, Avey Tare and Panda Bear really demonstrate their knack for writing catchy and memorable songs, however they play and toy with them to give eerie and distraught undertones to the already existing playful sounding soundscapes. This mashup creates one of the most interesting, and in my opinion, one of the most touching and rewarding musical experiences out there.
