Futures is one of the most memorable and heartfelt rock albums ever.

Futures is, by no means, groundbreaking. It didn't have a cultural impact nor did it innovate a genre. However, I do believe that it can challenge preconceptions of the genre by being the undeniable pinnacle of it. It's youthful yet profoundly mature. Optimistic yet heartbreaking. If Static and Clarity were probing around for their sound and Bleed American was the joy in finally finding it, Futures was the album that defined it. It was the album that made Jimmy Eat World the band they are today.

Jimmy Eat World showed they were a band able to write some of the most top notch pop rock songs (see their previous two albums), but it was with Futures that they were able to hone in to make their strongest album. It has the same catchy and endearing elements the band previously displayed, yet underneath it all there is a dark undertone. The song topics go through the struggles of love, relationship troubles, problems with addictions, and even losing friends succumbing to addictions. It really hits home for anyone that has ever dealt with these things. While the subject material is darker and moodier there still remains a sense of hope for brighter days. What really makes this album special and a classic to me is the closer, 23. It is my definite favorite song from the band, and one that always moves me when I listen to it. It perfectly caps off the album. "What are you hoping for?" sings Jim Adkins. It's about believing the future holds brighter and better things despite our darkest days. "I, I always believed in futures"

The majority of albums that deserve a classic rating have some sort of thread that runs through them; the album's completeness as a work contributes largely to the idea that it should be regarded in its entirety as a masterpiece. The only thing Jimmy Eat World's Futures has as a common theme is flawlessly catchy pop-punk songwriting. The first 5 tracks are simply some of the most endearing songs ever written, and it hardly lets up. 23 closes it off with a sense of occasion; the lyrics are packed and intriguing and the melodies will keep you there for days on end.

The first album that I ever bought. I heard "Pain" in 'Tony Hawk's Underground 2' and it rapidly became my favourite song in the game, so I got the album. I loved the uptempo stuff, but was disappointed by all of the slower material. And indeed, about half of Futures is slow burners. But I'm ten years older now and can appreciate those tracks a lot more. The songwriting is fantastic on not only those songs, but the whole album, and the production is fantastic. Despite a couple of relatively weaker tracks ("Drugs or Me," "Nothingwrong"), Futures is on par with Clarity for the title of Jimmy Eat World's best record.

Everything Clarity did right but with extreme touches of darkness and a mellow atmosphere. Futures is also blessed with containing Jimmy Eat World's best track to date: 23. Excellent.

From top to bottom, this is an immensely delicious album packed with interesting guitar melodies adept at sticking around in your mind for days to come. Jim Adkins' vocal performance on Futures is both direct and sempiternal, and the same can virtually be said for the percussion work provided by drummer Zach Lind. I myself was greatly impressed by this release, seeing how I was too ignorant back then to even let myself be pulled in by at least one JEW track.

This album is like playing a game of russian roulette. You either end up with fun, catchy, heart-warming and anthemic power pop tracks or heart-gutting, emotion-driven, and atmospheric alt rock ballads about drugs, addiction, and heartbreak.

Usually, I'm pretty stingy about the consistency of albums. If a record has a mid-album slump or slacks off at the end, I tend to rate it a lot lower than I would based purely off the good songs. Futures is an exception. The albums is horrible inconsistent. Downers such as "Drugs or Me" or "Nothingwrong" do nothing for the flow of the album and throw off totally the feelings left by the good songs. But the standouts make this albums totally worth the effort. "Polaris" and "23" are absolute sentimental masterpieces. Those plus one or two other songs on Futures make this an actualy worthy purchase to me.

This album, in my opinion, is one of the best JEW albums. It shows a definite growth and maturity in JEW's sound and lyrics. One can relate with every song on the album in his/her own way. I think every song is amazing and definitely deserves many listens.
