So the latest record from former third wave ska posterboys RX Bandits is quite a departure from their earliest works and continues in the vein of Progress and The Resignation. Filled to the brim with smooth and mellow vocals, sugary three part harmonies, and asskicking guitar riffs, while using their horn section only sparingly, the RX Bandits have put out one of the biggest surprise records of the year in ...And the Battle Begun. From the Police-esque title track to the nearly free form opus of Epoxi-Lips to the Mars Volta-esque 1980, this album offers something for everyone to enjoy.

Though this album doesn't come across as energetic or fun as "Progress" did back when RX had more of a Ska influence, they undoubtedly did something right while writing "...and the Battle Begun". Although I myself prefer a more "bouncy", ska-esqe sound to their brand of music, they don't fail in providing that progressive heart to the music that they lacked back in the day. While the majority of the music on this album leans more on the 'prog' side, it still keeps that tiny bit of ska to keep me interested; something they've lost on their most recent album. Still, a great overall album. 3.9/5

By far the band's strongest outing to date, the Rx Bandits really shine like never before on ...And the Battle Begun. Great production, a tight (and live) rhythm section, diverse influences, and a much stronger output on keys make this album a really fun listen. Hopefully these guys keep going in this vein, they could be a force to be reckoned with on the ska scene.

Innovation has come to a little bit of a standstill in modern music as of late. But, out of the masses of carbon-copies out there, a band has released an absolutely stunning album. I wish I had found out about Rx Bandits years ago. Something about their sound, the funky-fresh reggae-punk-emo-ska vibe that just totally clicks with me. Not a single bad track on this album. The opening accapella jam just totally gives the album this really progressive feeling right from the get go. And these guys are tight. Most of the rhythm section was recorded live, which is totally incredible sounding on the record. Buy this now, and you won't be disappointed.

This is one of those bands that most people won't get until they see them live, fortunately for me, I had never heard of them until I saw them live a few years ago, and they blew me away. The musicianship on this record is hands down better than 99.9% of bands that you have heard of. You should definitely give these guys a listen, and if their in town check them out.
