The positives: A marked improvement in Vincent's singing voice since Eternity. "Destiny" and "Lost Control" are cool. The ending of "Re-Connect" is powerful. The negatives: "Regret" goes on for way too long. "Shroud of False" is pointless and badly produced. "Empty" is poorly written. Overall, Alternative 4 shows promise, but Anathema did not fully capitalize on this promise until their next release.

The disc where it all started. Its strongest characteristic is its consistence; all tracks are pretty much spot on and it doesn't suffer of a quality drop as its successor.

what is perhaps one of their more experimental albums shows some of the best and worst of their career. the awkward sounding tracks in the first half really drag it down, fragile dreams losing its way after the first couple of minutes and empty's awful ending. but after that showcases some of the band's best work, inner silence onwards being winner after winner. it's a mixed bag but it's certainly a great album thanks to the greater songs like feel and inner silence. :]

Please. Could this album _get_ much better? Personal favourite tracks (at least for the last few months): Fragile Dreams, Lost Control, Alternative 4, and Re-connect. Never been a huge fan of particularly strong language, but am rarely able to get through Re-connect without being impacted by the line: "Come on and twist that knife again. Well, I'd like to see you fucking try. Never going back again."
