0.0 | Julianna Reed EMERITUS | April 26th 13 | I take back all I said earlier, because this is one grower of an album. It's Baths at his darkest, grimiest and most sincere, and the listen is fascinating.

4.5 superb | Naseki | December 2nd 16 | This album is like a sheet of sadness softly covering you. Sadness embraces you. Obsidian is surely a very personal album, but one I can highly relate with. I generally really love the musical style, I like how it somehow keeps a balance between an easy melody to follow and a little wackiness (the glitching). Some people dislike Wiesenfield's singing voice, but I think the soft vocals resonate well with the equally soft instrumental style. FAV TRACKS: Ironworks, No Eyes

3.9 excellent | Erwann S. STAFF | February 15th 21 | Whereas Cerulean sported a bright album cover, Obsidian displays a dark one. Musically, it's the same: even though this still remains electronic pop music, it's much darker than its predecessor. The drums are pounding harder, the drony bass textures make themselves more evident, which makes the whole thing a disturbing, yet ultimately poetic listen. Indulging into depression, Will Wiesenfeld offers his most impressive statement.

4.5 superb | Omeggia | July 6th 16 | just as Cerulean was, as daniel put it, "An album about love, and how nothing can or should stop
it" Obsidian is about death, and how nothing can or will stop it
it took me a while to crack this one but Wiesenfeld really bares his soul for anyone who is
willing to listen

3.5 great | Alabaster Jones | April 29th 15 | In stark contrast to the mellow, content, and fun debut album of his that was Cerulean, Will Wiesenfeld, or Baths, puts together a dark, nervous album that serves as the antithesis to his acclaimed debut. Even from the opener, "Worsening", you understand that things are much different, as the glitchy downtempo has been replaced with a more subdued, straightforward sound. That is not to say that he's lost his charm, though. You can still tell it's Baths producing the record, and though his work is more stripped back, he lets his voice take the spotlight this time around. The first half of the record is considerably better than the second, with songs like "Ironworks" and "Incompatible" stealing the show. "No Eyes" is, unfortunately, irritating, and a completely awkward and out of place piano line repeatedly interrupts "No Past Lives" constantly. Still, with "Earth Death" and "Inter" being the penultimate and closer respectively, the album ends on a high note. If you think this will be the same Baths you heard on Cerulean, think twice, as he crafts his darkest work here, and manages to do it very competently.

4.0 excellent | Kronzo | June 12th 13 | Baths is the pseudonym for Will Wiesenfield's electronic solo project. Rewinding to 2010, he
presented us with his debut piece known as Cerulean. Wiesenfield's debut displayed
itself as a carefree record that was as enthusiastic as it was ambitious. The glitchy and
stutter-laden feel of Cerulean, combined with its scattered falsetto vocals and
overall optimistic feel, was something unique-sounding to me, as someone who is relatively
new to this field of sonic exploration. This year, with his sophomore release,
Obsidian, his style has taken a drastic turn towards a darker side of electronic
music, I'd almost describe it as similar to Burial's 2007 record Untrue, except
noticeably more vocal driven. It's arguably even more vocal-driven than Cerulean,
which mostly works out for the better than for the worse. This is one of my favourite
records from 2013 so far.

4.5 superb | SupercolliderMusic | April 30th 13 | I have listened to this album a few times. I have gone back and listened to Cerulean as well. This album is almost as good as Cerulean to me and I have a feeling I will continue to enjoy it for a long time, quite like I did with Baths' first offering. It's just darker, more mature, and overwhelmingly honest.
