The 90s is unlikely to be remembered as a hotbed for great soul records, to put it lightly. Still, there was The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill - massive commercially, it was also a fucking brilliant album. Not once does it descend into oversentimentality, or feel like Lauryn's attempting something beyond her talents. Which is pretty good going, considering the album's diversions into rap, reggae, rock, and sky-scraping ballads Of the singles, "Ex Factor" is one of the most gut-wrenchingly beautiful songs of any decade or any genre, and "Doo Wop (That Thing)" is that rarest of beasts - a timeless party record. The rest of the album sees Lauryn spitting venomous put-downs Wyclef's way and opening up her bleeding, defiant heart all over the record. It's gritty, vital, and awe-inspiring. No wonder she still hasn't made a proper sequel - how do you follow something like this?

GoodrSolid production, very good flow. What brings it down slightly for me though is that its a bit samey in sound, and
the theme of pretty much every song is the same: break up/love/heartbreak, with little else in terms of variety

Usually I have an aversion of 'love' songs, but I think romance oriented songs are more forgiving for me when heard from a woman's singing/POV. Other than the endings of most songs going on a tad too long, this is a SOLID hip hop entry.

This is one of hip hop's finest accomplishment. Hill's beautiful voice matches wonderfully with those complex and soothing instruments. I do find that the songs kinda go for too long, which makes it a little jarring at times, but it's still an absolute masterpiece.

I see this CD everywhere. Its rare when I can say that about an album this good. It still Surprises me a little bit how popular it got. Seems seriously personal and makes her superior Unplugged album in 2002 seem like it doesn't exist.

The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill is a masterpiece of hip-hop and soul, every song packed with Lauryn Hill's emotions. It doesnt matter if she's rapping or singing, her voice is perfect over top of the excellent beats. I wish it hadnt taken me 13 years of my life to listen to this record.
