Mental Funeral sees Autopsy play two, rather different, sub genres of metal: death and doom. Songs switch back and forth between the genres, sometimes even within songs. For example, they'll surprise you with a death metal solo right in the middle of a doom song. Really unique stuff. The main negative about this album is the muddy sounding production that comes often accompanies doom metal.

Mental funeral doesn't demolish your family jewels with lightning-fast blast beats or double
bass. It doesn't need to.
What Mental funeral does, is that it fits the name perfectly. The atmosphere is unique for a
death metal album, and every instrument makes sense at every moment. Still, Mental Funeral
is far from being an overly-polished, boring product. The raw nature is very apparent and
this is in no way a melodic metal release.
When compared to the band's another excellent output, Severed Survival, the album is
surprisingly different but still sounds like good ol' Autopsy. The consistency of Mental
Funeral is close to perfect, every track has got something of its own and fits, but still
the album feels like a book: not just a compilation of good songs, but excellent as a whole.
And the same goes for the atmosphere.
My only con would be the less badass bass guitar, which is still pretty apparent but can't
be compared to DiGiorgio's performance on Severed Survival.
Very highly recommended to fans
of old school death metal. 4.5/5

After releasing what I consider one of the best Death Metal records of all time in Severed Survival, Autopsy released their second album Mental Funeral. Seeing it rated even higher than Severed Survival had me truly hopeful, however it seems they sidetracked from their pure, raw and disgusting Death Metal origins and went into pioneering death-doom with a slower style. Not a big doom person myself, so not overly happy about that, nevertheless still an excellent album with some colossal riffs.

Incredibly thoughtful death/doom with perfect amounts of dynamics -- excellent crushing doom and disgusting, driving death metal that constantly augments and complements each other throughout the running time of this album. Every single song feels like a classic.

Production is really bad, but if you get past that (or enjoy the rougher productions of the 80s/90s Death Metal albums), you will find a really enjoyable and varied Death Metal album.
