Killswitch Engage has always been seen as the “master innovators” of the metalcore genre. From the brutal riffs to the beautiful harmonies, they prove that they deserve their title.
As Daylight Dies, their third major release, does not disappoint, in fact it’s probably their best album to date. Adam Dutkiewicz and Joel Stroetzel deliver on a monumental scale. In true KsE style there aren’t any defined “solos”, but the harmonic, sweeping runs make up for this “absence.” Tracks like “This is Absolution” and “Reject Yourself” are prime examples of their unique guitar style. Dutkiewicz also produced the album and preformed back up vocals as well as played the guitar. The song “For You”, which could be considered a “ballad” even though it is still as heavy, showcases Dutkiewicz’s vocal talents*.
The vocals are truly amazing as well. Howard Jones seems to have delved even further into his own vocal style with this album. Jones’s operatic style of singing mixed with his range of screams have made him a stand out vocalist. “The Arms of Sorrow” present his singing skills in a wondrous fashion and “My Curse” shows how seamlessly he can transition between singing and screaming; with help from Dutkiewicz. However, his voice isn’t the only reason he is a great singer, it’s his songwriting ability that really shines through. From political rants to emotional pleas, Jones spills his heart on this album. The title track shows Jones’s concern for the race of man. Opening with atmospheric guitar noise, Jones, barely audible, recites “Slowly, we watch the degradation of the civilization, The rise and fall of all we are stands before us.” All around, Dutkiewicz included, the vocals on this album are amazing.
Don’t worry, I haven’t forgot the rhythm and bass section. Justin Foley beats the skins like a man possessed, he might be the best drummer in the metalcore genre. On tracks like “Still Beats Your Name” and “Reject Yourself” Foley shows just how fast and off-time he can play. Mike D’Antonio plays his bass just as fast as the guitarists, which is quite a feat.
Overall, this album never ceased to amaze me. Personally, I couldn’t see how they could choose a single; every track on this album has its own personality and its own message that the entire album should be put out. I give this album five out of five stars for its great musicianship and songwriting.

My favourite band What can I say? Not much new things to hear but a great album!!! Howard Jones improved in singing he's one of the best singers i've ever heard the guitars are excellent the production everything! GREAT!!! I'd LOVE to see them live but as I am from Macedonia that is not possible I think  ((

I think this has to be the album of the year for me.
All the songs are songs that you want to listen to, you never even think of pressing the skip button on your mp3.
It justs screams out greatness..and scream it does!
Howard does amazing vocals in it but Arms of Sorrow gives guys like me a chance to sing along!
Its great and i Fxcking love every minute of it

"As Daylight Dies" is Killswitch Engage in their most dynamic form, reaching a heartfelt and crunching sound that marks an entire era of the band: the era with the unbelievable Howard Jones. "My Curse" and "The Arms Of Sorrow" are two of my favorite songs of all time.

When I first listened to this album I felt rather let down. Killswitch engage didn't make End of Heartache II. They made a different album, that flowed different to its predecessor. Though with more listens I began to listen to the album more carefully and began to like it more. With this in mind I began thinking that this wasn't a terrible album just an album of a band trying to change but in some cases failing. Songs like Still Beats Your Name which seems heavy but weak and bland for Killswitch Engage and also Desperate Times which is just so bad for Killswitch Engage I felt it ruined the album for me the first time round. But their are amazing songs such as My Curse, Unbroken and Eye of the Storm. In conclusion I feel that this is a good solid metal record.

Definatly my favorite band at the moment. love all their albums espically the end of heartache and alive or just breathing. Howard Jones is definatly one of the top vocalist in metal in my opinion.

dude, this is totally hardcore awesome stuff. Perfect mix of heavy and melodious riffs and just songs. I do wish the bass was a bit louder but the gutiar riffs were awesome, howards vocals were awesome, adam actually sang 4 some more songs! that was awesome...the only way they can get better in my opinion would be to let adam sing even more, and add a couple solos here n there...not too many, mayb 2 or 3.

I love the screaming. Great metal band with awesome guitars and lyrics! My Curse and Arms of Sorrow are totally sweet. This album is about 40 minutes long and pretty much every single second rocks!

i thought this album was simply amazing from the intro on "Daylight Dies" to adam d. singing on "My Curse". howard jones i must say is simply the nicest dude in the world and to top it off he can fucking sing. i have a problem with not being able to hear the bass but other than that this is a great listen.

Howard is such a killer vocalist and he shows it very well here. His hearty voice resonates with immense power and is given even more time to shine than off of the previous record "The End of Heartache". There are still good riffs galore (although their previous album is rather hard to beat in that regards) and overall some great, catchy hooks in the form of "As Daylight Dies", "My Curse" and my personal favorite "Arms Of Sorrow".

The harmonized guitar melodies to go along with Howard Jones' ability to switch between gnarly screams and some inconsistent clean vocals would usually be something considered an easy target by metalhead elitists and whatnot. As Daylight Dies demonstrates, however, that this might as well not be the case. On this record, largely everything you'd expect from Killswitch Engage is on point, as the band members have great chemistry which is further exemplified due to how tenacious the songwriting is throughout. It's quite a miracle how these guys are one of the more respected metalcore groups to exist.

If you enjoyed previous KsE efforts such as Alive or Just Breathing and The End Of Heartache, then you should be totally floored by As Daylight Dies. All of the elements of what makes this band a cut above the rest are here, from excellent production to booming guitar riffs. As Daylight Dies is truly the crowning achievement of the Howard Jones era, and is a modern masterpiece of metal.

My favorite album of all time, and one of the best metal records of the past decade. KsE has always been considered one of the pioneers of modern metalcore, which means they have to set the bar high. With As Daylight Dies, they reach a whole new level. Ever since Howard Jones joined the group, they've seen an increase in popularity and honestly have just become better as a group. No disrespect to Jesse Leach, as he's great in his own right and is actually listed in 4 of the song credits on this album. Howard, however is the best frontman in metal not only thanks to his effortless attempts to go from screaming to singing, but his ability to sound exactly the same live, and also his impeccable songwriting. He wrote "My Curse" in 20 minutes which has become their biggest and most known hit. "The Arms of Sorrow" is one of my favorite songs due to the emotion apparent in not only the lyrics but in Howard's voice especially on the opening lines. This album has great replayablilty thanks to the fact that there is no filler on this album. The skip button is not needed, as every song is one of a kind in its own way. Let's not forget the talents of Adam D. who helped produce one of the best albums of his career. They make great use of harmony using his voice in parts of many songs such as the chorus of "This Is Absolution" and the end of "My Curse" to name a few. Every aspect of this album is done in top notch which makes it one of the best of all time hands down.

I used to consider this my favourite KSE album for the longest time. Of course, that was only because (for some horrifyingly confusing reason) I was avoiding going back and re-experiencing their older releases. Regardless of what I end up choosing -if ever I do- this will remain a special album to me and a landmark release for KSE and metalcore itself.

Nicely produced album.. i have yet to get used to the new american metal thing though.. where tracks are really short and certainly not along enough to develop a certain theme/ idea fully.. i suppose its a ploy for people to buy their albums huh
