It seems somehow paradoxical that mediocrity can be more disappointing for a listener than an album that's downright bad, but it's an unfortunate truth. Were it not for the Jezabels' stellar discography to date, I'm sure that The Brink would be a much more enjoyable listen. However, lacking both the spine-tingling moments of vocal intensity found on tracks like Endless Summer, trademark tom rolls that almost seemed to sing the melody on tracks like Hurt Me, and the stellar, dynamic songwriting that made their past albums great, The Brink sees the Jezabels become prisoners to their own past success.

With 1-2 I was confused as to why this has such a lower rating. They are both sublime
Jezabels jams. After that though, the record seems to loose its focus, hesitantly various
directions and not quite succeeding. The record has a more pop direction overall which I
enjoy. They go on 80's pop in places, definitely use more synths, and loose the post-rock
grandeur of their past material. It has a couple sublime bridges and bits n pieces but
overall the bulk of the album is pretty bland. The last two tracks pick it up though, but
nowhere near the level of 1-2. Can't say anything more precise bcs I deleted my notes like
an idiot, but this is definitely the first dip in quality in their discog. 3.7

Beautiful music that will bring joy to yo momma, but it clearly doesn't top their 2016 magnum opus.

The Jezabels’ debut album was excellent. The band had a knack for creating songs that seemed to build up before peaking at just the right time and moving on. The Brink is a different beast. The band seemed to have moved in an 80s electro-pop direction, but it’s a nice change that I definitely approve of. They’ve still got the kind of songs that Prisoner featured, but now they’re interspersed with more upbeat, poppy tracks that add a whole new dimension.
