III Albums in, BBNG remain consistent in delivering exciting and original new jazz/post-bop
for a millennial generation. Although a much more mellow experience, III is arguably
their best work yet thanks to the trio pushing into different genres seamlessly (swing,
electronica, and ambient on top of their hip-hop based roots). Thus suggesting the trio
desire to remove the genre tags altogether. Easily will be a forerunner for best Jazz-based
albums of 2014.

Expertly crafted groove jazz, one of the few albums that force a mood, a mindset. Even better than the late Nujabes! This album is more concise than the new Animals As Leaders, which drifts into mush.

If jazz wants to move beyond nerdy fucks masturbating themselves to Pharoah Sanders, maybe BBNG is hinting at the right direction. Take traditional jazz instruments and overall aesthetic, but be influenced by modern music (you know, the kind young people actually listen to, like hip hop or electronica, or another genre no one cares about anymore, like post-rock). III is their best output (that first four tracks run is as good as they get, Hedron remains one of my fave and Eyes Closed is the embodiment of third-wave post-rock meets jazz). However, I still feel they didn't attain their full potential (for example Differently Still brings nuthin' new to the game, and when you bring nothing new to a 100 years old genre it's kinda bad, and some ideas are dragging for a tad too long, eg Since You Asked Kindly that has one cool idea but repeats it for almost 5 minutes). The split album with Ghostface was good but not mindblowing as 2015 me hoped so, and IV is a bore. Let's hope they still have that special record in them.

"III" is the softest and most succinct work of BADBADNOTGOOD. From it, you can already see the tendency to blend Hip-Hop and other contemporary Pop trends, but the focus was still Jazz. In "IV" this happens again, but you can see that the next work will be more innovative in this sense. "III" brings the style to the fore, being that it comes from other times and with few bands to represent it. Seen this, the third work of the band is one of the sincerest works that you will listen in your life.

While occasionally too meandering ("Eyes Closed," "Sustain"), overall III is an impressive record. The standout tracks ("Can't Leave the Night", "Hedron") are fantastic, and the sheer amount of variety-- from hip-hop beats on "Triangle" and "CS60" to the lounge jazz of "Differently, Still" to the infectiously appealing circus-esque pulse of "Since You Asked Kindly"-- is admirable.

Nujabes? Animals as Leaders? You're better off making comparisons to Chick Corea and Madvillain. But you'd be equally wrong. Standalone this album is fantastic and much more cohesive than their last two efforts. Listen to this, listen to it again, listen to it again after that. You won't be disappointed.
