I'm not sure that I'd ever call this album a surprise - part "Trainfire" and "Blackberry" with the rest of its composition made up of Ghost's haunting ambiance, Casualties of Cool is an album that's been a long time coming from ol' Dev. The blues have always been evident in his playing, as has the expert layering needed to pull of that subtle elements like the sax in "Moon" or the early electronics of the record. With Devin previously indicating that "Ghost" was the direction he felt he needed to move in, it makes absolute, perfect, beautiful sense that Casualties is the next step... and that it's as picturesque and wonderful as it is.

My first rating was after listening to it once and not very intently. I real like most all songs. They are well crafted, changes feel right and thought out. Dynamics are superb. My favorite I have listened to in a long time.

While the singing is really pretty, and particularly shines on moments like the gorgeous "Flight", "The Code" and "Moon" the real highlight for myself were the moments in between these peaks. Where the album's soundscape opens into a foreboding mournful cacophony. "Hedja" with its native tinged instrumental, "Pier" with its repetitive rumbling percussion and "Deathscope" which drops out like a panic attack and floats through its cold bitter space to its ending. Fantastic album.

The best Devin record of the decade. Maybe because I've grown tired of his recent Disney-prog-metal endeavours, or maybe because this his most original, diverse and subtle recent release. For sure nobody expected him to pair up with the Ki collaborator Dorval and release an ambient and gothic country album. And yet, it works perfectly: it's both haunting and beautiful, while the atmosphere and the singing are mesmerizing. The association of the two voices is one of balance and control: even though Che's voice is the most prominent, Devin's ethereal whispers add a bleak yet enchanting tone over the whole album. And that's the sign of great records, when the content and the form intertwine to complete each other. The music is luring you through your fear as much as the sentient planet is luring the protagonist of the story, and what is comforting in both the sound and the story is the liberation of the woman held inside the planet/music. Said liberation frees the soul of both the traveler and the listener. Shame the middle part of the record, while good in the context of the story, feels underwhelming compared to the bookends.

Casualties of Cool is difficult to describe because it sounds unlike any other record I've ever heard. No, this is not Ki 2. Devin's description of the album as resembling "haunted Johnny Cash songs" is about as good a summation as can be. Even conceptually it is remarkably unique: it uses the country genre to tell the story of someone without a country-- someone who travels through time and space. Suffice it to say, this a record which you should hear as soon as you possibly can. It is the best album of 2014 and further establishes Devin Townsend as one of today's most accomplished, and ingenious, musicians.

I like country and rock but I find this album does nothing great in either, especially country. The album has diversity and decent songwriting but not much else.

Although Country is something of an acquired taste these days, this works very well. The atmosphere and the reverb heavy production really brings this record to life and makes it feel isolated yet vast. The vocal execution is nothing short of mesmerising, however it when listening to the whole album, it would seem that many tracks do not stand far apart from each other. It does have some fairly bland moments but this is definitely one of the more innovative albums this year

Devin Townsend is even more of a musical genius and mastermind because of this project. This is country music worth listening to that has meaning and uniqueness to it. Though it was slightly repetitious in some parts, it also never became boring because virtually each song always had the wow factor to it.
