The Clash have slowed it down before, but for the first time they sound tired.

I know most fans believe that Cut the Crap is The Clash's worst, but personally I think this album is even worse. "Should I Stay or Should I Go" and "Rock the Casbah" are the only two worthwhile songs here, and even they are mediocre at best and annoyingly overplayed (especially "Should I Stay").

I enjoyed this album a lot. There is not only punk but also other elements are present here and there including funk, traditional rock n' roll, and so on which give this album a very unique sound and feel.

COMBAT ROCK is an album that I've always wanted to like more. The obvious standouts ("Should I Stay Or Should I Go", "Rock The Casbah" and "Straight To Hell") aren't quite enough to overcome the mediocre songs that fill out the rest of album - namely the 2nd half. This should be have been a great album, but it falls just short of that. I'd much rather listen to SANDINISTA than this one.

The most pop friendly version of the clash still rocks. The two singles and songs like Straight to hell and Death is a star really elevate this album.

"Your greatest weakness is an excess of your greatest strength." I don't know who said that, but it pretty much sums up the fall of the Clash. The fearless, fanatical innovation that made 'London Calling' and 'Sandanista!' is here proven to be only successful if good ideas can canvas the sprawl. An Arabian dance number ('Rock the Casbah'), a Kinksy-pop rock piece ('Should I Stay Or Should I Go?') and a haunting Eastern masterpiece ('Straight To Hell') are the sole songs here that keep up with the relentless demand of the Clash's creativity. They are uniformly unsupported.

I can see why some people dislike this album...and being a big fan of London Calling it is a little dissapointing...but i still consider it an amazing album and of course "Should I Stay or Should I Go" and "Rock the Casbah" are awesome songs even if they achieved commercial success...the Clash didn't sell out people...they always tried to change up their sound and that's one of the things i admire about them! If the mainstream recognized the greatness that is the Clash than that should be a good thing! This stuff is a gazillion times better than the crap that's popular nowadays!
