Been a DG fan from day 1 but this one's an incoherent mess. The repetition is annoying, the novelty has been reduced from catchiness and innovation to machine gun rattling stupidity. Noise for the sake of noise. Fav tracks are Say Hey Kid and Viola but the rest is not great. Do yourselves a favour and pick up Midcity by Clipping.

With this LP, Death Grips take their electro/glitchy aesthetic to dizzying new heights. All the while still keeping their gritty lyrical content and infectious hooks that made releases like Exmilitary and The Money Store so enjoyable. The result of this is their most convincing and cohesive record since The Money Store #staynoided

I love Death Grips. I love what they do, I love that they truly could not give a single solitary shit about what people think about them, and I love that every album they drop is out of the blue with little to no warning. That being said, this album almost seems abrasive and "out there" simply for the sake of being so. While their earlier albums were chaotic, there was at least a semblance of structure and coherence, and even a bit of melody within the noise. But this just sounds like an absolute mess at times and though the inclusion of Bjork is nice, she doesn't save this from being very poorly executed at times. And the lyricism is completely foolish for the most part. "Tame and cashmere go together. Cashmere makes perfect better." Seriously?
I will always listen to a new DG album, but these last two efforts do not leave me hopeful for the future.
EDIT: Okay maybe I was a bit harsh at first. Still disjointed as fuck, but it's decent.

The idea of the band using Björk's vocals to write songs is a novel gimmick, and the album thankfully capitalizes on it by delivering largely terrific tunes. Up My Sleeves, unfortunately, is a weak start to the album. They're just too out there and unusual for the sake of being weird, in my opinion. It's a little annoying to listen to. Thankfully, they return with Billy Not Really, a collection of largely outstanding experimental hip hop tracks. Overall, a good album.

A lot of the lyrical content on here is some of their most cryptic and enjoyable yet. The
music on here is great for the most part, but some of the instrumental elements feel sort of
thrown together/cheaply produced. There's definitely a step down quality wise as far as
mixing and instrumental quality. Taking into account that this was all played by Zach makes
this album all the more impressive and makes up for any blemishes. It's certainly better
within the context of the entire double album as a polar opposite to JD, and it stands as
their most mind-bending piece of work by far.

I'm not sure what to make of this record- and I think that's exactly what Death Grips intended when creating it. I have admiration for the increasingly experimental direction the band is heading in, but at the same time prefer the Exmilitary and The Money Store-era to it. Some of these tracks lack anything that really grabs me. MC Ride is great here, though. And the production is excellent. And some of the tracks ("Have a Sad Cum," 'Fuck Me Out") are incredibly interesting. I have in the past praised Death Grips for never releasing the same record twice, and the trend continues here. Regardless of your opinion of their output, that trait alone is extremely admirable. 4.4
