This album has aged quite well. R. Borlax is loaded to the brim with one good track after another featuring classic tracks like Cutsman, Bunnies, Handsome Shoved His Gloves and the fantastic Pol's Voice.

Nowhere near as powerful as their future releases, R. Borlax was more or less a reminder of HORSE the Band preparing for the surprises to attack. The guys' debut album strikes more hearts than it does poison them, what with its synthesizer-heavy effects courtesy of the fabulous Erik Engstrom and the vicious performance by frontman Nathan Winneke. None of the tracks on here are filler in the slightest - except for maybe "Immense Defecation of the Buntaluffigus", which is understandable - and the production, while a bit weak, does pretty well on signifying some of the 'stealthy' goofiness of certain songs. Looking back on this, R. Borlax isn't as invincible as I thought it was several years ago, though it's still a fun and somewhat merciless record nonetheless.

HORSE the Band seems more like a joke, yet they play incredibly catchy music. Their fusion of 8-bit, techno-ish style synth and hardcore (and sometimes verging on power metal) is incredibly unique and almost every song on here is exceptional - Cutsman is by far one of the best songs I've heard in a very long time. Their mixture of heavy passages topped with a 'beeping' synth make this a very refreshing album in the mix of all this generic metalcore.

Every once in a while a band comes along that just gets it. HORSE the Band is one of these. They know their weaknesses, they know their strengths, and they play to both accordingly. The music is simple, yet very effective, being laden with pure emotion and raw energy. The guitar often takes a back seat throughout the album, allowing for the keyboards, HORSE the Band's most major strength, to shine through as needed. Each song on R. Borlax is quite independent of the others, most of which very rarely following any particular, predictable structure, making it easier to listen to the album, waiting to hear something new and exciting that hasn't been done already. R. Borlax may take time getting into, but once it's in place, it will not disappoint.
