Poison the Well are a band who never reached the massive potential they hinted at. Versions epitomizes this: there are innumerable good ideas here ("Letter Thing," "Riverside"), lots of nifty production and layering, but the songwriting needs refinement. It's too noisy and suffocating, even in the quiet parts. And Jeffrey Moreira's yelling doesn't fit the more nuanced sound the band has adopted. Take "You Will Not Be Welcomed:" it has an epic, soaring ending, but then there's just... yelling over it. Doesn't work. And it ends too abruptly, too (there's that songwriting problem).

Now, a 1 for ptw is not ranked on the same scale as a 1 for any others, but this is honestly one of the most awfully produced albums in the history of music. Noisy, annoying, unorganized are all terms used to describe this release. How they lost their touch. Although I am one of the few who liked "you come before you," this band is crazy and have lost their ability to be critical of one another. They have been touring and playing shows since they were like, i dont know, 12? and there is no excuse for something of this calibur, but every band must have that "one" in their discography I suppose. But seriously, after repeated listens it's still total garbage with no salvation. "We didnt drop the bodies, we didnt put them on the floor...." i mean whaaaaaaaaaaaaaat??!!
