Formed from the ashes of experimental post-punk band Women, Viet Cong's self-titled album was one of the most anticipated records of 2015, and it was released in January. Does it meet expectations? I would say so. Granted, it is not Public Strain, but it is still a great listen and it is easy to tell the two bands apart. That is not say that there is no experimentation one here, quite the contrary in fact. The strange noises the guitars make while the bassline swirls inside of them is a highlight of "Pointless Experience". The odd, staticky buildup in "March Of Progress" gives way to oriental instruments and a thumping drum beat. It's a droney record, but it still manages to be very catchy, as opener "Newspaper Spoons" and "Continental Shelf" prove. The highlight of the record, though, is massive closer "Death", a fantastic amalgam of all that is great about the record. All in all, a superb listen, as if anyone expected anything different.

A somewhat quick and spotty post-punk chameleon album that works its way from a crackly industrial intro to noise-synth new wave to jerky-riff punk to 11-minute closer; enhanced by warm and drony production that resembles an old dubbed over VHS tape. Comparisons to contemporaries Deerhunter and Wolf Parade are as valid as old standards like Joy Division and the Bunnymen - like these bands, Viet Cong has a knack for combining unique and catchy rhythms with goth-bleak dissonance. Not to mention hi-hat blitzkriegs, which never hurts.

It's an amazing roller coaster ride in post-punk/noise rock/industrial music. Though it's only 7
songs, it works to the benefit of the album. Each song is an all-out assault against the senses,
and I'm not sure the listener would be able to take much more after the album's conclusion
(especially after the fantastic closer, "Death"). Offensive name aside (the band said they would
be changing it for their next album), this is one heck of an album and is definitely worth
checking out if you like more experimental music.

everything i wanted from this album is here. phenomenal post-punk. everything from vocals to guitars to drumming is spot on. it sounds like post-punk too, which is nice.

At first I was concerned that they'd fall short on the post-punk meets drone blend, but this album is proof that it's definitely possible and with glowing results. The EP was great, but this is even better.
