This is an incredibly frustrating album. The potential for Avril to take the next step and make a truly memorable record was there. It still is. But at the moment that all it is - potential. Unfulfilled potential. Why she has persisted with the immature crap that blights the record is beyond me. Some say for irony, some say it's as a piss-take. Personally I couldn't care what it's for if it sounds bad. And Girlfriend sounds bad. The verses of The Best Damn Thing are an abomination. But this is where the frustration and contradiction comes in. The chorus of the same song is as catchy as any Avril song, and decent Pop-Rock. rThe fragile When You're Gone is one of the few tracks that's solid the entire way through. Everything Back But You is the most 'Punk' song Avril's just about ever done. It's not bad. A strong middle-section of the album is then wrecked by the awful I Don't Have To Try. The album gets stronger after the awful opening, and there are catchy hooks all over the place. And that's not more than you would expect, but they're still there. All in all this is better than her first album, about the same as the last one, and no where near as good as it could have been.r

yet another pop punk album that doesnt have much beyond its hits. i dont have to try sounds like a cute feminine version of a bodom song tho might actually listen to that one in real time

Yeah, not gonna lie this was my shit when I was like 14 or 15. Looking back at it at 21 now. Eh, it still isn't bad. Contagious and Everything Back But You are still the standouts. I don't usually have guilty pleasures but geez, this is one. I will not put it on my phone, I just can't haha.

Some solid tracks on here, but the album is hindered by ones like "Girlfriend", "Everything Back But You" and probably the worst offender, "I Don't Have to Try". That one is just cringe worthy.

It's a step backwards from the melancholy that was Under My Skin, although not necessarily a huge one. I have to say: the decision to revert back to a more energetic, bubbly style for The Best Damn Thing must've been tough for Avril Lavigne.... aw, who am I kidding? It was predictable. Out of her first three albums, this is the one I consider my biggest guilty pleasure - and for good reason. Many of the tracks are catchy as all heck and the 'pop punk princess' couldn't sound any better, but this album's main setback is the lyrical content; you would think Avril would stop rattling her long, blonde hair at ex's for a change and such, but no.

Before this album came out, I liked Avril Lavigne. Her early work had good lyrics and a seeming authenticity to it. The Best Damn Thing entirely changed my opinion of her, and for the worse. It really is a terrible, terrible album. There are a couple of songs that are not overly disgraceful - "Contagious" and "Hot" - , which is why I don't give this an even lower rating, but " I Don't Have To Try" is quite possibly one of the worst songs ever written. Avril seems to be attempting some sort of screamo at times, and it just doesn't work. On other tracks, she just comes off as an overall obnoxious person. I hate this. I absolutely hate it. It's not even the kind of music that's bad yet catchy, it's just awful

It was going to go to Hell eventually. After she dropped the whole wearing neckties and trashing the mall dealio, she dyed her hair pink and started playing with the uglier side of her pop elements. While her whiny post-Alanis pop-rock style was once upon a time not only tolerable, but enjoyable, this just comes across as torturous - not to mention trying way too hard. Nothing works here, and she's got no-one to blame but herself.

HEY HEY YOU YOU I DON'T LIKE YOUR GIRLFRIENDrThose lines are my ****in' nightmare, they scare me more than a crimson head in REmake or Hell Revealed 2 WAD for Doom 2.rBut partly, my opinion has changed.rThere are some standout songs like I Can Do Better (Whatever you say I like it, I love her attitude while singing it), Everything Back But You (The most Pop-Punk song she's ever done), and Runaway (Extremely catchy, reason I may as well get this to 2.5). The verses to the title track are absolutely awful, yet the chorus is catchy enough to save it from being a trainwreck. But the rest.. well, it's decent, asides from the abomination called "Girlfriend". Why is that song so loved, that is beyond me.

All I can say is, "What happened?" I love Avril's older works because of their catchy tunes and angsty lyrics. Unfortunately, Avril did not mature in her sound. She went backwards, which resulted in this pink, chant-filled, and slightly more vulgar nightmare. I am deeply saddened by this album.
