Once again even fourteen years after Voodoo,
D'Angelo puts out a better Prince record than the
man himself. Album of the year and there's probably
no competition, it's that good.

First thoughts:
-Easily his most diverse in terms of influences... everything from soul to funk rock to
folk to psychedelic
-He taught himself guitar since Voodoo and it's damn good, the solos are obvious
highlights
-This is a very dissonant, abrasive record in parts... "1000 Deaths" sounds heavier
than a lot of rock I listen to
-I think a lot of longtime fans will disagree with me (a new fan) but this could be his
best record. Sonically and instrumentally it's his best by far. The only downside is his
vocals are sometimes muddled, but this record is much more about atmosphere than
anything else.

Famed neo-soul and R&B artist D'Angelo was beginning to become a bit of an afterthought for a lot of people during his fourteen-year-long hiatus. But, to those who love soul music and R&B, D'Angelo would remain in their hearts for decades. Now, things are starting to change. D'Angelo is now back on the forefront of soul/R&B, titillating dedicated fans, making former fans refocus, and making many new fans in the process. The reason for this refocusing is simple: Black Messiah is one smooth, soulful, and (for some) nostalgic record. From the opening spaceship-like noises on "Ain't That Easy" to the final piano strokes of "Another Life", Black Messiah showcases everything D'Angelo's about. From smooth bass lines, soulful singing, and lyrics that have just as much relevance today as they did when they were written, Black Messiah is a fantastic comeback album. If you're going to listen to one more record in 2014, make it this one.

Idk... I wanted to like this album more than Voodoo. A tad more collaborations, one of few issues I had w/ Voodoo, were featured here but hearing the first few tracks made me have more initial doubts than the first two records. Tracks 2 and 3 disrupted the momentum of interest from the first song.

Gorgeous funky neo-soul. Music to have sex to. The instruments are heard sharply, and while D'Angelo's voice always seem in retreat compared to said instruments, the whole lot is just too groovy. What's the most impressive here is the production: it's rare such a smooth and delicate record can sound that abrasive.

A lot of people are talking about this album in terms of album of the year. I think it should be in the discussion for best albums of all time. Black Messiah, to me, is peers with the Red Hot Chili Peppers' Blood Sugar Sex Magik, Van Morrison's Astral Weeks, D'Angelo's Voodoo, Rolling Stones Exile on Mainstreet, A Tribe Called Quest's Low End Theory, The Clash's London Calling, Funkadelic's Maggot Brain, Marvin Gaye's What's Goin' On. It's enigmatic and strange, yet intricately layered and beautiful. Just my personal opinion, but this is one of my favorite albums of all time.
