This is a sick album. Sonorous and dark, infused with crazy ambiance and rounded out by some awesome stretches of straight smooth jamming (like in Fear and Sickness, Hidden Faces, and Water is Not Enough, amongst others). I've heard albums that plod, but this is different; this shambles along with a sinister, heavy drag, an evil smirk, and a crooked claw that reaches out and grabs you up at a moment's notice, and you can't help but enjoy the ride. I was expecting not to like this very much (2.5). One straight, thorough listen and I knew it was something to pay attention to.

On Given to the Rising, Neurosis have crafted a vast dark and creepy doom album where the vocals just add to the feel. Some of the ambient sections could almost be used as a horror film soundtrack. Also, some of these riffs are fat as fuck.

I wasn't a huge fan of this one before, but one morning I took a long walk in the woods before/during the dawn while listening to this. That really put me in the right mood and I got massive vibes from the album.

These guys are just so tribal! While not their best album by a long way, this is a more-than-solid effort from Neurosis and with tracks such as "To the Wind" and "Origin" (with the latter's hypnotic tribal drumming and softly resonating guitar strums leading into a vicious and dense sludge metal assualt in the final 2 and a half minutes being one of the album's biggest highlights) the band prove that they are not going anywhere anytime soon. Neurosis are here to stay
