The follow up to STP's incredibly successful 1992 debut, Core, is a strong album but does not quite meet expectations. Things do start out good with Meatplow, Vasoline, Lounge Fly, and Interstate Love Song all being classic STP tracks. The rest of the album is a different story, however. While there are no actual bad songs on this album, just not all of them really stand out. Pretty Penny is a good song, along with Big Empty, but neither sticks a lasting impression in your head. Silvergun Superman is just another rocker, but like always, nothing weak to be found. Towards the end of the album things pick up with the classic Unglued, and another strong outing in Army Ants. A good buy for fans of Core, but don't expect anything spectacular.

I agree with your sentiments clairvoyant. I really like the first 5 songs but they seem to hit a flat spot in the middle and never recover (Army Ants the best of the rest IMO). Always had a liking for this band for some reason, I always thought they would have a massively successful album. But it wasn't to be....

The band silenced the majority of its critics with this absolute gem of a sophomore album. Interstate Love Song and Vasoline in particular cement STP's legacy as one of the finest 90s rock bands. Every cut here is worthy of a single release.

Possibly the best STP album, this album sees the band distancing themselves somewhat from the grunge style of its predecessor, Core, in favour for something more unique and varied. The result is an airtight tracklist of classic rockers, each with distinct motifs. Great album.

STP really started to come into their own with Purple, a much more fun and focused record than their debut. The band plays around with more of a stylistic variety, alot of it evoking memories of the 70's, and I feel that fits this band so much better than the grunge-aping of Core (that is still somewhat present on this album, just not as flagrant as before). The musicianship is tighter, the melodies catchier, and Weiland's voice is incredibly versatile, he sounds good no matter which vocal style he chooses. Lounge Fly and Army Ants might be filler, but it's still stronger than alot of the material on their debut, which wasn't all that bad itself. Vaseline, Interstate Love Song, Still Remains, Silvergun Superman and Big Empty all rank among Stone Temple Pilots best songs.

Looking past the big four of 90s Grunge, there is a lot of lost gems in that specific era of music. This is undoubtedly one of the better grunge albums of the era and one that, ubfortunately, has only regained slightly more recognition in recent times due to Scott Weiland's premature death (God rest his soul)

Just listen to these 12 gracious melodies and tell me where the hell all these Pearl Jam comparisons come from? Scott Weiland and the DeLeos have crafted a mid 90s alternative masterpiece for our enjoyment. They lost a little of their edge, but I think it served them well artistically as well as commercially. This has music for every mood as well as a sense of timelessness about it that could span generations.

A cool and uplifting release by the practical grunge legends. There nasally and raw sounding guitars and strong choruses drive this album nearly into overdrive. I have noticed for much of this album, they sound like numerous other groups. "Interstate Love Song" is tangled between a Modest Mouse tune, and a soft mellow Radiohead jam. "Still Remains" has a Smashing Pumpkin sound to it, and "Unglued" has a full force, aggressive, and wholesome Foo Fighter critique to it. But in all honesty, this album is a great build. It has much to offer, and the instruments themselves are definitively a plus.
