Jack White is a nut, plain and simple. There are some really wacky, out-there songs on Icky Thump that definately deviate from the simple bluesy, garage/jam band formula they were branded with. The early title they held with the Strokes as being at the front of the garage rock revival seems like a long time ago when you have the White Stripes making very spacy and bizarre music like this. A good listen but somewhat off its rocker

The White Stripes go out with a bang with their final album, Icky Thump. This is their most creative and musically expansive record imo, and their most enjoyable listen. This is their heaviest record, and there is some metal influence on the title track, Little Cream Soda and Conquest (which also sounds like some Mariachi type stuff). The album title couldn't be more appropriate, as Meg's foot pedals devastate speakers on every song. Jack's guitar work is excellent, and he tries some new things too, almost always yielding positive returns. There are even some psychedelic vibes and one very strange, but funny track (Rag & Bone). A great way to end a career=to leave the audience wanting more, as I would have loved to see what direction they were going.

It's fitting that The White Stripes' final album be a microcosm of their entire discography; solid, yet middling with a moment or so of true brilliance. Icky Thump does contain a lot more instruments in the compositions than before, but this added personality is somewhat annulled by the lackadaisical nature with which both Jack and Meg operate with on the album. There's more going on, but they both just sound so eager to get it all over with. Songs like "300 M.P.H. Torrential Downpour Blues", "Bone Broke", and the nearly-metal "Little Cream Soda" are all pretty great, but most of the material here isn't really anything to write home about. It sounds great, as good as any later White Stripes record, and most of the songs are written smartly enough to end once the ideas are exhausted. Basically, if you were a fan of there previous records, you'll enjoy this for sure, and if you didn't, then you won't. Simple.

'Icky Thump' completely blindsides the listener and makes every other White Stripes album look one-dimensional. The eclecticism and variety here give Jack White a whole new character - one that he should have been flirting with while he was churning out textbook blues.

The White Stripes go a different direction on this album, which is MOSTLY rewarding. It's great to hear a new sound from this band, as always, but "St. Andrew (This Battle Is In The Air)" is barely a song. Meg has proven she can sing, so she shouldn't be taking a step back. "Bone Broke," "Rag & Bone," "Slowly Turning into You," "A Martyr For My Love for You," "Catch Hell Blues," and "Effect & Cause" are top tracks.
