Why does this sound like a mathcore version of ?as the roots undo?

First time listening through, I can't help but think that this is the one cd i've purchased so far this year that has lived up to every expectation I've had for it. It brings together the sheer brutality of Put On Your Rosy Red Glasses and the technicality and vibe of Nuclear, Sad, Nuclear and still has the ability to thoroughly differentiate itself from both of the previously stated albums. The vocals have made progression, along with all the instrumentation. This entry is more technical, more brutal, and all around a great progression from the band. There is so much more in this that their previous music didn't offer (from clean singing vocals at the end of Sleeping With the Fishes, See? to an upbeat acoustic breakdown in Paper Weight Pigs). Don't hesitate to check this out.

Mongrel is a ridiculously intense mathcore album. Tons of shredding with drumming ready to change the tempo at the drop of a hat. There's a lot of variety in the harsh vocals here, as well. There's all these great performances and ideas thrown at you, but sometimes they speed through one ear and out the other before you can fully grasp them.

12 has always been and band whose style is hard to put into words. In a way, they are very scatterbrained and randomized, but retain moments of calculated structure as well. Mongrel is no different, given the tranquil and subdued experimentation woven within abrasive, spontaneous mathcore riffing and drumming. This is not the 12 you heard on Put On Your Rosy Red Glasses, or even Nuclear, Sad, Nuclear. This is the bands tightest, most technically proficient effort so far in their discography. The grind influence that shone on their debut is all but gone, and the sloppy play of their sophomore effort has turned tighter this time around. Still, some of charm of those previously mentioned qualities is missed. The vocals are still absolutely insane, but they aren't as intelligible on this record as opposed to previous works. All of this is very apparent on songs like "Imagine Nation Express", "Jaywalking Backwards", "Grandfather", and "Alright... I Admit It, It Was A Whorehouse", and although the record definitely loses some steam near the end, this is still a great effort from the band, even if it's not their best.

Definitely a grower. After a few listens I can definitely tell you this is one of the best albums ever as far as the Progressive Post-Hardcore genre goes. Would say for fans of The Fall of Troy and BTBAM but they definitely have their own unique sound which is an art of its own. r

Crazy and wild as the title implies, No. 12 made a yappy, beautiful mutt of an album that entrances as it kicks around the room yelling at you for being a piece of shit.

With the crisp, edgy sound of Mongrel, the Number Twelve Looks Like You will hit the right notes to anyone open to their style.
Mongrel takes the Number 12's sound to a new level with excellent production of musical compositions.
Yet these are not songs, but musical personal manifestos carried out by the band members musicianship.
A level of energy that can only be heard and felt through this band, Mongrel provides the listener with that medium.
Well crafted, unique and complex creations are carried out and are easily appreciated, yet not for everyone. The Number 12's sound will take some getting use to if you're not an avid listener of the six piece mathcore set. But something deeper and extraordinary lies within Mongrel that can be accepted by open ears.
Mongrel represents a sound that cannot be matched by any other modern artist, a sound of chaos and confusion, then again carefully organized and understandable; who expected music could be so schizophrenic?

A chaotic blend of technical musicianship and unorthodox song structures. This album is everything you could want it to be. The one thing I don't like the "mathcore" label. I really feel you can't classify this band, as they are all over the board. A nice intro to Jay Walking Backwards really changes things up from their massively chaotic and brutal sound. Their vocals are the one thing here that could let them down. I like their vocals (especially the low grunts, really wished there was more), but it is sort of hit or miss. Overall, a very technical and unique sound that shouldn't be missed. Best songs: Jay Walking Backwards; Grandfather; Sleeping With The Fishes, See?
