3.0 good | dslDILBERT | September 23rd 07 | Well, it's that time again for another punk rock band: reaching maturity. However, in this case, they're trying to do it again after their last "mature" album, "Chuck".
The album kicks off well with solid songs "Underclass Hero", and the gut-wrenching (and surprisingly varying) "Walking Disaster". However, from there, the album begins to "slow down" and level out. It doesn't necessarily become bogged down, but some of the songs start to sound like they've been recycled a bit too much. However, despite this, the songs are decent and mostly good fun to listen to particularly for the casual listener.
By the end, you've had some laughs, and some doubts about punk rock being original anymore, but in the end, it was good fun at the least to listen to and no where near laborious as some of the poorer punk rock albums such as Bad Religion's "The Grey Race".
Recommend Songs: Underclass Hero, Walking Disaster, Ma Poubelle, and The Jester.

3.0 good | JayVex | August 1st 07 | Being a Sum 41 fan from the very beginning, I awaited their new album with great anticipation. I had actually heard
Underclass Hero and March Of The Dogs weeks before the album was released and loved them, which raised my
expectations even further. When I finallly went and bought the album and listened to it, I was slightly disappointed. I
got the faint feeling that I'd heard similar stuff somewhere before. After listening to it a couple more times, I decided
that the similarity to previous tracks was unimportant, and that ultimately, this is a pretty decent pop-punk album
that doesn't try to be anything more than it is. Highlights include the singles Underclass Hero and Walking Disaster,
but Count Your Last Blessings, Speak Of The Devil and King of Condratiction are also excellent tracks, delivering
exactly what people have come to love about Sum 41. I think Chuck and All Killer No Filler are both slightly better,
but this is still a more-than-welcome addition to their repetoire of pop-punk.

1.5 very poor | Bedex | March 31st 22 | If you don't know the word milquetoast, listen to this. This is either uninspired pop punk rehashed to oblivion, or music so cheesy it sounds like what you think of at 11 when you daydream about making cool music with your cool band. 1 sounds like off brand Fat Lip but benefits from being first on the album. 2 has a super cheesy intro but a 'real' pop punk unfold as a surprise around a minute in, which is a cool idea although the execution here is very meh. 3 is ultra teenagey, and 4 is cheesy beyond belief. 1:45 on 5 shows what I mean by music I thought was cool at 11. 6 is a joke, 7 shows how rehashed the pop punk is here as it feels like it's the third of fourth time we have heard the same melody. 8 is kinda fun actually and is one of the best track here at a maybe upper 3.0 lower 3.5 sort of rating - at least it tries. 9 is ok but bland, 10 has a cool intro riff I guess but htat's it, 11 is fast paced which helps I guess, and by then I was skipping through the tracks and nothing further retained my attention. 1.5

2.0 poor | FoozerFan | July 7th 18 | Okay. Album's got some great songs on it, but it's way overbloated and the track sequencing is pretty whack. With several tracks omitted and tracks rearranged it could be a 3-3.5

1.5 very poor | RobbaqPL | February 28th 12 | Of course, one could argue that it's impossible to find the line between inspiration and
plagiarism in popular music. But making a sub-par American Idiot three years after is a
bit too much to digest. Alright, some of the songs are not half bad ("With Me" can
actually seem pretty touching) but when you hear "The Jester" and MCR's "House of Wolves"
back to back you can only shake your head in silent disapproval. Or when you see how the
first two songs are half-assed attempts at remaking the opening duo of the aforementioned
AI, both musically and lyrically. I mean seriously. And for the lyrics... Let's just put
this one aside. No more politics for you guys, never ever.
Bonus points substracted for pissing on Chuck. It really seemed to be the good direction,
was only half as derivative as this and twice as fun.

1.5 very poor | raggedragamuffin | November 8th 11 | Chuck was already a letdown after Does This Look Infected? I used to love those guys; the Cross Your "T"s and Gouge Your "I"s DVD they sent out with DTLI? was hilarious. Underclass Hero was not even listenable. Maybe I just grew out of them. But I think it was just a terrible album.

2.0 poor | Chunky97 | August 27th 11 | Overall, this album was a big disappointment. However, they were some moments that almost redeemed the album (emphasis on ALMOST), including "With Me" and the title track. But those moments weren't enough to save the album. So unfortunate for an album with so much potential.

3.0 good | LightOnAStreet | March 29th 11 | A step in a new direction for the band -- this is Sum 41's "American Idiot". Although obviously different from some of their older stuff, I felt they showed some impressive maturation as musicians.

0.0 | MrDoobie | December 2nd 09 | Everything Sum 41 does just sounds so derivative (even their name). This CD is no exception. They've just switched from blink 182 wannabes to post-American Idiot Green Day wannabes.

2.0 poor | milrichouse | July 16th 09 | It's a poor album, and consequently made this a frustrating listen for me. The fact I actually spent money on this. 'Count Your Last Blessings' is the only song I could bear putting on my iPod

4.0 excellent | cado32 | December 26th 08 | I really enjoyed this album; i think that the band is matured lirically, and musically they explored new sounds with the use of keyboards and pianos. This is a softer album than their previous Chuck, cause i think that the songwriter ( Deryck Whibley) wanted to tell something really deeply personal with these songs : his childwood whithout a dad (walking disaster, dear father), his feeling of love for his wife (with me , best of me) the
goodbye to the ex guitarist(so long goodbye). In conclusion i reccomend this album to everyone,
Favourite songs: The jester, Count your last blessings, Pull the curtain.

2.0 poor | JackAttack | October 25th 08 | I was pretty disappointed with this CD, to say the least. Punk rock has come a long way, and I don't think there's much more for bands like Sum 41 to do in order to be successful. "With Me" made an excellent single, but the rest of the album just wasn't memorable.

3.0 good | AmericnZero02 | December 14th 07 | A rather disappointing album in my opinion. While it is in no way a bad album, it just lacks nearly everything that made Sum 41 a great band in the past. It only has a few tracks that could appear on All Killer No Filler. Instead, Underclass Hero is filled with slow, moody tracks. And while not all of those tracks are bad, it’s certainly not expected or completely welcome when one is looking to buy a Sum 41 album. Underclass Hero seemed to have taken a few features from previous release, Chuck, and developed them into a new sound. Darker tracks such as “Count Your Last Blessings” are clear examples of this.

3.0 good | ATLbraves | December 10th 07 | I really did like this album. Really, i loved it. It's just (in my opinion) i think where they were at with Chuck is where they should of stayed. Chuck was their best album in my opinion. They finally hit their peak musically and lyrically. Trying to step it up any further just didn't seem it would work. Like i said, this was a good album, i was just expecting more. It had some great choruses and the writing was exceptional. And i do realize they had to cope with the loss of a very important band member, i guess it just comes down to my musical taste.

4.0 excellent | schmizzy | November 4th 07 | I find it hilarious how after 5 pages of comments, these kids still don't even fucking know if Deryck is on the cover of the god damned album. Everyone slams them for sounding like Blink-182 when they were big, now it's Green Day. Because that's what you do if you have no idea about the band or the album for that matter; you associate with something else that someone else said, thus making it easier for you and making yourself appear more educated then you actually are. The fact is that if anyone here had taken the time to do your research, you would find out that this whole album was written as a journey from the start of this band to the present day. So, it would make sense for the start of the album talk about being an "Underclass Hero" seeing as how that was how one felt when being a teenage rebel. "Walking Disaster" voices the stages of adolescence moving from wanting to abandon your parents at any cost to eventually realizing you've missed out on oh so much. Then this teenager grows up and begins to question the world around him as seen in "March of the dogs" and "The Jester". Thus, leading in to a sense of being confuse on what we should and should and should not believe. Then Deryck finds love and moves into the stage of life where one must grow up and mature as he becomes a husband. This album ends with a ballad aimed at former guitarist, telling him that whatever he does, they understand and it's ok. You can slam an album if you choose, at least i don't mind. I love embarrassing idiots.
