A lonely, evocative, challenging album with its own kind of intensity, to my ears this is Julia Holter's Bon Iver Bon Iver: following a beloved album, she has returned with something that is markedly maximal in its minimalism, a fever dream sequence of songs that adheres to its own internal logic, whatever that may be. r(also yeah this was boring as shit for the first few listens but has very steadily grown on me. Everytime Boots feels pretty out of place sequencing-wise, only major gripe I still have)

Holter's music weaves and side-steps at every turn; just as you manage to get a sense of its tact it fizzles into smoke. At first I thought its playfulness punched holes right through its cloud-like plateau, but I am beginning to respect its tenacity and verve.

Absolutely gorgeous album. Holter's fearless blend of classical and electronic instruments creates these beautiful soundscapes which just sound phenomenal. Meanwhile her voice adds an emotional layer to the music, that makes it easier to connect with. Especially outstanding is her performance on 'Betsy On The Roof'.

While promptly inaugurating continuous heart-stop splendor with opener "Feel You", she has the gall to ask ME if I'M mythological. As if -- they're the ones spawning the stuff of legends, what with all these exquisite string+voice combos soaring to the heavens and beyond. They can slow down time and sweep you into a protracted elysian atmosphere or neatly pack it up into invigorated high-tier quirk-pop; baggy bass and hopscotch drums are nimble and vital when they apply, fiery sax and wistful spoken word thrown in for why-nots. Holter's poetic ambiguity can tend to get swallowed or float on by, so she drills it into the realm of unforgettable from time to time: "I can't swim, it's lucidity / So clear!", "Uh-oh! / She said". And of course, "The birds can sing a song", which ends up acting as anchor to a weightless island-stranding so plausible and exotic that when birds do sing a bit, they fit right in.

It was a 2.5-3 for me back in the third to fourth listen, but it's so pretty and grown so strong in you that it might become her most celebrated release to date. Also, people who loved Ekstasis will get into this easier than the Loud City Song fans. It's more about orchestra stuff and beauty than about tension. Althrough being and "old" song, Betsy On The Roof is probably my fav of the album, and one of her best.

One of the sweetest and most dreamy pop albums of the '10s; one that sounds inspired from those waves of dreamy, aesthetic pop albums stemming from post-punk in the '80s and early '90s, but Holter takes her own direction quite well. Never the type of album to top the charts, but one to top one's heart. It's adrift constantly, but rich with melodies and elegance, and a definitive 'grower'.
