Not as new as a person you might think, and the experimental side of her is somewhat trivial but you can't fault her because their is a daring effort wanting to reach out.

this is defin a much more mature album compared to his previous ones but it sees rihanna trying to perform well in a lot of different genres and, as expected, not everything works that well. it's a mix bag. 2.5+

Riri's last album - 7 fucking years ago, and she's still as relevant, if not more than then. ANTI is undeniably her best record because it allows itself to dive into pop-adjacent genres without making the songs a gigantic mess. Nevertheless, she fell back into her tendency to plainly rip off a major success without much adjustments ("Same Ol' Mistakes", what's your ipseity?). But hey, that's Riri.

Complete surprise after the prior album, as this one has a real identity - doesn't sound
like it is the same Rihanna in a lot of places actually-, is well constructed, and is never
annoying. Fantastic turn for Rihanna and makes me excited to hear what she comes up with
next. The whole thing could be a top tie mainstream album a la Dangerous Woman, if only it
weren't for the run from 10-13 which is full of ok but dull ballads, 10 being folky, 11
soul-ish, 12 showing Rihanna overstretching her voice, and 13 at least offering a nice
album ending. Before that, the album was easily in 3.5-3.6 range. 1 is a kinda jammy hip-
hop infused track, 2 is a lovely interlude with remote FlyLo/Thundercat vibes, 3 (and lots
of other bits) remind of Banks' flavour of RnB - not a jam but I enjoyed how atmospheric it
is compared to her prior records -, 4 is maybe 20s too long but I like it - feels a bit
like a modern take on her early hits but with a more intimate, sexy, laid back direction.
Drake's contrib is a bit eh but does not ruin the track at all. 5-7 are ok to boring. 8 and
9 are the album's peak, both jams. 8 is an incredibly sexy track. 9 starts off weird in
contrast - the transition is not so great, but the track is the biggest surprise on here,
being a long track full of depth and with sweeet dream pop DNA (yes). Strongest track on
the record probably. If only she stopped there. I'll re-listen to this, but maybe stopping
at 9. Bonus tracks uninteresting. 3.35

Scrappiness leaves this helplessly disjointed, which is okay cuz so is Rihanna kinda -- sensual swagger shining all the while, she prefers her love-tangles scabrous if not outright destructive and to resemble the feeling of crack, the let-loose whiskey slurs and semi-edgy electronic twiddling threatening to overshadow the epic balladry and mushy Drake guest-spot. Both sides of that coin deliver: "Kiss It Better" and "Close to You" are plain ol' beautiful with their respective thunderous drill-synth geetar-wails and piano-strings subtlety, "Woo" sees her as a defiant mech-ghoul cooer for Travis Scott's stridulant auto-tune-max waltz, "Work" makes a Billboard-smash incantation from a hook that progressively twists into nonchalant gibberish. And despite the discernibly fractional moments and some half-hearted performances, the momentous waste of time here goes to the utterly weak and imitative Tame Impala cover; an instance of indie-exploit if I've ever seen it and one that nears the 7-minute mark to boot. Aw, but what about all those sub-3-minute coulda-beens?

Nothing Rihanna released since Good Girl Gone Bad almost a decade ago has been anything more than overblown messes of albums with maybe 2 hits each and that's it. Nothing, that is...until this album. With ANTI, Rihanna has finally given us an album with enough consistency that it can be listened to the whole way through. One can only hope this remains the trend for future releases. Recommended Songs: Kiss It Better, Desperado, Yeah I Said It

Barbadian singer-songwriter Rihanna has never really earned my attention, quite frankly; aside from a few of her pre-Rated R singles that I often deem "dumb fun", it proves difficult to stomach a full album whether if it's because of Rihanna's vocal range or her compositions not being all that realized. Now having said this, the 27-year-old lady's 2016 album is kind of a different dragon altogether: the production incorporates not only a sense of reflectiveness, but also stylistic traces of soul, pop, and dancehall music. In spite of ANTI being pretty scattershot when it comes down to maintaining consistency and offering a couple shitty moments ("Work", anybody?), the overall product at hand is surprisingly enjoyable for what Rihanna attempted to do. Tell the rest of what this girl has in her back catalog to shut up and drive, 'cause here lies a recording that could attract non-fans and probably even detractors. Angel recommends: "Consideration," "Kiss It Better," "Desperado," "Never Ending," and "Close to You".

Would like to say it's a "return to form" but she isn't in any way returning to her previous... "thing", and that's actually quite good. It's more like a change of direction, and it gives her a very new and refreshing sound. There are still some major flaws within the album, like the beginning which sounds unstructured; the very emotional "Higher" that sounds as if it were, unfortunately, incomplete; "Woo" sounds as if she recorded some song and then someone put a random instrumental over the vocals; lyrical idiocy:
"I know you won't, cause we share common interests
You need me, there ain't no leaving me behind
Never know, no, just want out of here
Yeah, once we're gone, ain't no going back"
No "FourFiveSeconds" (guess no one is going to forgive this) and sometimes it sounds too similar to "Talk That Talk" in it's production. Oh, and "Work" is downright incomprenhensible, as if she had a stroke before recording it, or maybe it was the one who wrote it. "Anti" is indeed some kind of antithesis, with some very good highlights; however, Rihanna tried too hard to sound different (experimental maybe?) that she forgot to clean up some of the things that made her previous music a bit ridiculous.
