You ever try a piece of candy or a drink or some other edible substance that tastes good but is just too sweet for your tastebuds for you to really enjoy it? That's kind of what it's like for me hearing Art Angels. Don't get me wrong, there are some really good pop songs here like "Flesh Without Blood", "Realiti", and "World Princess Part II", but more often than not I find myself wishing it wasn't so oversaturated with sugar. "California", "Butterfly", and especially "Kill V. Maim" are all guilty of this style that's too adorable for its own good, and sometimes comes off as kind of forced. I'm not going to sit here and tell you that Boucher doesn't have a good voice or that none of the songs are catchy, because she does and some of them are, but I believe one of the lyrics of "Butterfly" say it better than I ever could: "Don't know this song; sweeter than a sugar cane." In all, the album as a whole is okay, but I can't help feeling it would've been much better if not for the aforementioned issues.

Low 6 out of 10: There is so many things done well with this LP. I'm just not a huge fan of Grimes' style. I can enjoy this for what it is and I highly suggest people look into it, because it is pretty inspiring for any "bedroom" musician, but I can't do much else other than enjoy it.

At first a weirdass album, Art Angels transforms from "Flesh Without Blood" onwards into a banger-full pop record that retains enough weirdness to be Grimes, but still adopts enough pop orthodoxy for these songs to be, well, songs. There are some fillers that easily surpass the status of "slightly irritating", but these lil guitar riffs and ethereal honey flowing into my ears are too much to ignore.

The biggest problem dragging Grimes down is not her style of futuristic deranged glitter-spraying love-maniac, but that she cannot make this exhilarating surfeit of glamorous insanities compliment each other. This album only wins over her others for its less all-over-the-place construction. Which in turn leaves it feeling more inessential than Grimes' ballsy aesthetic would like you to believe. So it is her more straightforward project, but even then a less than substantive work.

Grimes gives us a part of who she is with this project. While it may have a poppy synth-pop vibe to it.. the lyrics may be deeper.. Sounds great to the ear and the songs have great personality.

This is one of the most eccentric albums I know, and one I've come to love dearly. Art Angels surprises because of its heavily pop-oriented sound, whereas Claire Boucher's earlier expressions demonstrated synth/electronic/ambient-related sounds. Without losing the latter, Boucher manages to come further explore her 'style' (which is so bafflingly diverse it cannot be termed), without losing sight of catchiness in the process.

Art Angels is an essential album of the 2010s as it is a masterful combination of great electronic beats, unique vocal styling and genuinely some of the best hooks in modern pop. This record is so dense with memorable tracks that it is seriously hard to filter through and chose the best of the lot. Her beats are on point: you could listen to this record 40 times and still find new noises here and there that are placed with such precision it is remarkable. Her hooks and choruses provide catchy lyrics, intense emotional peaks and valleys and deliver tons of energy. Her style is certainly unique and it is a shame that many turn their nose to it and won't give it a chance. Like in cinema, many of the greatest achievements find a middle ground between mainstream elements while still pushing the boundaries of the craft further. Grimes has done that here.

Canadian singer-songwriter Claire Boucher, better known by her alias Grimes, manages to deliver a solid fourth album in 2015's Art Angels, now available for that dust collector of a Nintendo 64; what, I can't borrow jokes? Anyway, getting back on the subject of this record, it's stylistically a fusion of dream-inducing indie pop and electronic music. Though this has been already done, needless to say, said combination makes for an enjoyable trip to Candyland and back. The saccharine, playful nature of Art Angels is a blessing and simultaneously a curse: I can appreciate Grimes' bubbly, sweet vocal performance for what it is, though at the same time, there are instances where she becomes too much alongside the material - which doesn't disappoint regarding filler; hoo, boy, is there a lot of it! Let's just say that your enjoyment of the recording will depend on whether you like your coffee with loads of sugar, only a pinch of it, or none at all. Angel recommends: "Flesh Without Blood," "The Belly of the Beat," "Artangels," "Realiti," and "World Princess Part II".

Initially foreboding levity via sunny-trite sike-out ("California") and animalistic multilingualisms ("SCREAM"), it quickly gains magnitude as a coltish sugar-bounce wonderland -- an alternate-pop REALiTi where sprightly guitar strums and the art-party sound-swirl of whip snaps/sneaker squeaks/bubble bursts meet the persuasive bangerisms of club-bass aplenty/cheerleader chants/chipmunk chirps. Sonically weird and adventurous, nearly unstoppable when it comes to catchy+complex merriment, it's a splendid evolution from the comparably drab Visions. Mindset perhaps summed up during the particularly ecstatic title-track: "I don't need your medicine / Gonna dance all night / I'm high on adrenaline".

A lot of these songs are built around (to my ear) overly trite country or guitar licks, while Boucher throws sample after sample at it to make it interesting. There's too many samples clashing with each other and it makes for really scrambled pop music. It's exhausting to listen to, and a step backwards for her as a producer.
