Devoid of really any dynamics, variation, or personality. Vocals could use a bit more range as well and vocal harmonies are not as important as I thought they would be. Pretty stripped down and boring tbh. I am disappointed. Was looking forward to this album. Pretty unmemorable

The early morning struggle to throw yourself into the daily grind whilst the months bills pile on the hallway floor. The nagging sense that the past has been wasted, the present passes in a flicker and the future holds nothing. Listen to Floridoodoo and snap, if you were a yank you'd go on a mass shooting. Total drivel to be enjoyed while wearing specs that you don't need

I'm not so sure I get the lukewarm reaction this record seems to be getting. Yes, it's certainly not as rich or textured as something like Merriweather Post Pavilion, but it's still an AnCo album through and through. There's still the playful little quirks that pepper any given record of theirs, whether it's the bubbly synths or the well done psychedelic production and aesthetic. There's still very catchy numbers here as well, such as infectiously fun opener "FloriDaDa" or the short-yet-sweet "Spilling Guts". It does become a bit samey during the middle stretch of the record, but the quality of songs on the beginning and ending stretches really make up for this unfortunate lull, especially tracks like "Vertical" and "Golden Gal", the latter of which is a bonafide Animal Collective classic. I can't help but feel as if Painting With is criticized for what it's not, rather than what it is, which is a cute, fun, and positively AnCo psychedelic pop record.

Painting With is a directionless gloubiboulga of a psych album, with pounding drums way too fucking high in the mix (they ain't Skrillex), and their typical harmony vocals here just sound overpacked.

Another interesting release from AnCo. The sounds are no longer blended together, instead being shoved clearly up in your face. The songs sound overly childish at times (not like they aren't aware of it) and sometimes obnoxious, but for the most part, I'd say it's good.

Could be conclusive confirmation that these animals have collectively ceased to keep giving a shit following the long-time-coming and merited 2009 breakthrough of Merriweather Post Pavilion -- while lotsa peepz bemoaned the exorbitant clutter of 2012's successor Centipede Hz, at least that felt refulgent, agitated, bustling; hell, kinda filthy. Here we see arrangements similarly thronged but muffled and flattened, an enunciated simpler approach that often comes off as a hasty rush-job, vexatious bouncy-ball harmonies that manage to be both vertiginous and lifeless, and John Cale+Colin Stetson drone+sax guest spots left nearly illegible. Not that its without ear-worms that beckon and standout/bearable moments and a boatload of wonder-sounds, but never before have they come across as clocked in. Eliminating that aura of indifference at least woulda been nice.

This is probably gonna be one of the more disappointing albums of the year for me, considering how awesome Animal Collective were at their peak with stuff like Merriweather Post Pavilion & Sung Tongs. FloriDada & Golden Gal still kick ass, though, so I guess there's that.

While the first pass may leave an unmistakable smile on your face, the feeling somehow seems very rsurface level. Consecutive listens prove that this isn't lacking any of the depth that AnCo fans rhave become accustomed to. With a career that's approaching 2 decades and more releases than I rhave digits, Animal Collective still manages to release an album that sounds unmistakably rdifferent than anything else they've ever done.
