4.2 excellent | Benjamin Kuettel EMERITUS | January 31st 16 | Ulver's latest outing is one that convalesces together elements of psychedelic rock, drone, and ambience into a pulsing, organic entity. It's almost too easy to get lost in the beautiful soundscapes, as well as the dark, trancing noise that permeates the mind. The hypnotic qualities Ulver has explored in the past are brought to the forefront here, showcasing all sides of the band's sound for a truly haunting and emotionally engaging release.

4.5 superb | Underflow | January 22nd 16 | It's like if Godspeed You! had an identity crisis and turned into a krautrock tribute band with Neu! and Faust tattoos and used rolling paintball splatters on their live show projectors but made sure to oogle at Sunn O))) pin-ups before every show.

3.0 good | Trey STAFF | January 19th 16 | There was a 4-album span (The Marriage of Heaven and Hell through War of the Roses) that I really liked these guys, but they've just gone too far into the abstract for me.

4.1 excellent | Erwann S. STAFF | May 4th 22 | yah it's a journey; a journey through experimental music; a journey through a dozen of different genres, among others drone, post-rock, ambient, psychy shit, etc etc. What's astounding is that they manage to make this journey land on several tracks, like the gorgeous progressive ambient "Desert/Dawn", or the grand post-rocky "Nowhere (Sweet Sixteen)".

4.5 superb | Paul Quinones | November 23rd 16 | Holy hell I just threw this on because I was looking for AOTY contenders and heard it was good, and had no idea what to expect and it blew me away. It's very hard to believe that this was recorded live because it sounds spectacular. The fact that I'm pouring time into a variety of releases to make an AOTY list kills me because I just want to listen to this nonstop. Strong case for #1.

3.0 good | zaruyache | October 15th 16 | Exceptionally long experimental/post-rock. While good, it's still a lot to take in.

4.0 excellent | EasterInTheBatcave | August 15th 16 | Ulver delivers yet again. This time, the music is sourced from a series of live free improv shows the band performed, and enhanced in the studio. There are lots of shoutouts to previous records (most obviously is "Glamour Box (Ostinati)"'s reinterpretation, "Glammer Hammer"). There is jam rock ("Cromagnosis"), ambient ("D-Day Drone"), and more, and while the record is long, it's engaging.

3.5 great | Alex C. | February 11th 16 | Atmospherics that ultimately work, paired up with great production values and a musical variety that's quite uncommon even for Ulver. Great work, might not have enough substance to be worthy of a 4 though.

4.0 excellent | Alabaster Jones | February 3rd 16 | Once making some of the most influential folk-infused black metal, Norwegian band Ulver has always been different from their contemporaries in Norway, even from the get go. Since they've taken metal out of their musical equation entirely, they've made some highly ambitious and experimental records that are seen as just as good if not better than they're dealing with metal. ATGCLVLSSCAP is another one of those records, as it helps cement Ulver's legacy as being a band always in fluid motion, under constant change. It's a strange and entrancing mixture of post-rock, krautrock, ambient electronic, and all things psychedelic. Apparently, much of this music was recorded live with a fair amount of improvisation thrown into the mixing pot, which is pretty impressive. It has a wonderful, shifting atmosphere, and when there are vocals, they're pretty good. It definitely requires patience, but listeners will uncover some very good things from this record upon repeated listens.
