Rather disappointed that it's nowhere near as good as Acid Rap, but it's still a damn great, passionate effort by Chance, nonetheless. However, what really dilutes the entertainment value of this is that it suffers from My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy Syndrome: a far above competent artist relying too heavily on the features on the album (which end up stealing the show way too often) as opposed to letting their creativity take front stage

With the star-studded lineup found on Coloring Book, being one of the best rap albums in a long time should be no problem. Well unfortunately outside of No Problem, the album is run-of-the-mill pop rap with heavy gospel, soul and all of god's grace sown in. After hearing Chance's masterpiece verse in Kanye's 'Ultralight Beam', it seemed like a no brainer that a great Chance solo album would be natural. Unfortunately the album has a forgettable track for every good to great one. The most impressive part of the album is the sheer amount of diverse styles with everything from Trap to full on Gospel. Sadly this falls short as the album progresses, the gospel and Christian elements are seemingly shoved down the listeners throat and it becomes tiring. Everyone rejoice, rejoice, rejoice; we get it. Impressive lineup, instrumentation and production but somehow the frontman (is it Chance or Jesus?) becomes lost and has left his best work on The Life of Pablo.

I feel like there are a bunch of edgy kids on Sputnik who like to bash on the gospel parts on this record. Just because you don't believe in God doesn't mean you should discount the parts of this mixtape about him. I'm not a Christian, but the gospel-ly songs on this album really get to me. A few songs are just not that good, but this is a very solid mixtape - better than Acid Rap for sure.

If Chance tried to make Acid Rap II, the expectations would have swallowed him whole. By
effectively going full-on gospel while keeping his impeccable flows and idiosyncrasies, Chance
injects several shots of overdue optimism into the tropes of hip-hop without getting saccharine,
respecting the framework while expanding the boundaries of what the genre can do. It may not hit
the listener as hard as Acid Rap, but it's certainly just as compelling.

Coloring Book is the work of a passionate guy who really wanted to craft his magnum opus but ended up creating a bloated gospel rap record whose genuine character borders on the good ol' cringe ("Kanye?s best prodigy / He ain?t sign me / But he proud of me" lmfao bro).

Another album I'm guilty of overrating at release. I got pretty swept up in the hype especially since I'm absolutely in love with Acid Rap. This album just doesn't bring the same feelings out of me AR does. Still not bad though

Steadfast sustaining the winsome posi-gospel spirit found on his ultra-lit "Ultralight Beam" guest-spot, 'Coloring Book' makes for a more-than-meet titular pick: Chance's agile geniality is markedly illuminating+comforting, the plethora of partakers spanning from Young Thug to the Chicago Children's Choir bears a fete-esque vibrancy, nostalgia and newfound fatherhood permeate throughout, The Lion King gets referenced not once but twice, big guffawing-head hooks and a "don't be mad!" chaff you into givin' in to feelin' good. In true guest-laden lengthy mixtape fashion, it sports its fair share of clutter and inconsistencies; and as addled voice-laden production and unabashed pronouncements of "HOW GREAT IS OUR GOD" tend to do, this goes an iota overboard on the pitch-shifts and pietism.

Remember after MBDTF when everyone was waiting for the new Kanye, but all we got was a mixtape with no real direction, an over-saturation of guest features, and with tracks that ranged from bad to great but were mostly mediocre? After the brilliant stroke of originality and emotion that Acid Rap was, Chance follows his idol's example by releasing his own Cruel Summer.

Summing up this release: Meandering, tired, bored guests and SoundCloud beats. It's almost as if he listened to Life of Pablo and wanted to follow the model: this release has a similar lifelessness and total forget-ability. The only thing that saves it is that Chance raps like he's alive while Kanye, who has clearly angered his ghost-writers beyond belief, does not. How disappointing.

Full to the brim with relaxed flows, gospel-influenced production, several excellent guest spots, and some pretty slick wordplay, Coloring Book is Chance's most consistent effort to date. It's a staple of Chance's tapes to be inconsistent, with the best tracks being phenomenal and the worst being merely listenable. This tape subverts that, as pretty much every track beyond the first two has something to offer. Whether it be the somber "Summer Friends", the smooth "Juke Jam", or the endearing "Finish Line/Drown", there's a nice, positive feel to the album, helped along by the sustained quality. There were moments on the tape that got me to crack a smile, and I suspect it's the same way for many listeners. In all, it's a really fun, enjoyable tape from Chance, who hopefully will keep his newfound consistency. Side note: As long as we're all clear in the understanding that there is no such thing as "gospel-rap" and that anybody who says this tape is such is a sensationalist numbskull, all will be well.

i don't understand how people can enjoy an album as awfully mixed as this one, especially considering we are in 2016. chance could've done an album about farts and you guys would still be applauding him. besides, the features, for the most part, did a lacklustre job and chance wasn't even doing his best here. not impressed, at all. 2.5+
