23rd January, 2022: Primordial - To the Nameless Dead (folk metal, 2007)
There’s a contagious passion to this album that I can’t fully describe - something about the
wrought vocals and atmosphere of distant nostalgia that combine to give an overwhelming series of
emotions. Folk metal has long been a genre that’s difficult to take seriously, but when it’s
delivered with such fervour and intensity, matching the soul and heart of traditional folk with
the fury and rage of metal, you actually get something quite poignant. The vocals are always going
to be a sticking point for people, but I absolutely love them. They remind me the most of Patrick
Walker, of Warning and 40 Watt Sun, particularly in the twisted and overwrought modes of his early
work, and they are perhaps equally as divisive. But for anyone who has written off folk metal as a
bunch of cheesy larpers, give this one a spin for something different on the genre.

While "The Gathering Wilderness" is rightly argued as the album that solidified Primordial among contemporary Metal's very finest, "To The Nameless Dead" triumphantly cemented them as legends. Less subdued and earthen than its' predecessor, "To The Nameless Dead" boldly soars with a resolute passion the group has never fully duplicated, and few artists ever truly achieve. - 4.8/5

The word "epic", at least when used to describe music, is often said with a derisive, sarcastic tone. True, the meaning of the word has been downtrodden and oversaturated, but in the case of Primordial, I don't know if any word fits better. There's an old saying that still rings true today: "Only the dead see the end of war." It's with this bleak, solemn outlook that Primordial injects their record with, not only thematically and lyrically, but also in the tortured, powerful sound they've established. The riffs are swift and all-encompassing, and the tom-heavy drums accentuate a dark, monumental atmosphere very well. Nemtheanga is once again absolutely phenomenal vocally, sounding as if all of the dead of which he speaks are speaking in unison with him. It manages to be completely serious without ever going overboard or having even one morsel of cheese, an impressive feat considering the base sound is black metal-influenced folk metal. To The Nameless Dead is a wondrously captivating record, being both hopeless and fearless at the same time.

On 'To The Nameless Dead' Primordial captures a celtic, folk metal essence without the use of any non-traditional metal instruments. The creation of such an environment without any flutes, extraneous strings or much acoustics is impressive and the best trait of the album. The length of the album is a bit intense if you consider most of it is driving rhythm guitar riffs but subtle melodies, epic buildups and the raw power of Nemtheanga's vocals manage to keep strong momentum for the entire length. The album is a bit draining because it keeps such high energy for so long but every-time I put it on I ask myself, why don't I listen to this much more. It took some time to grow on me but the gimmick-less Celtic with a hint of black metal on this record is excellent. Tracks 1-5 are truly fantastic.

TtNd is a raw yet very emotional piece of work. Some of the best riffs I have ever heard reside within this album, as well as haunting melodies, and choruses that encourage you to sing along. Nemtheanga's voice is spectacular. He lives and dies with every breath, with every word, with every scream and every growl of this album, like it was meant to be his last. Truly one of the best, if not the best, albums of '07.
