3.5 great | LotusFlower | July 1st 16 | The Avalanches return after 17 years of silence and endless cock teasing and deliver a new record
that does more or less the same thing as before, only this time the result is more mixed. rStarting with
ra strong introduction between Because I'm Me, a vibrant throw back to Since I Left You with rup'd
production values, an electro-swing jam with Frankie Sinatra, and an urban painting with rSubways
rand it's accompanying interlude Going Home.
From there, the waters get shaky with interludes focused on establishing some form of narrative that
get disinteresting quick and a handful of simply flaccid tracks like The Noisy Eater. The last half
especially abandons any consistency established before with odd toning of neo-psychedelia and your
expected slice of Avalanches themed electronica. The stretch from Live a Lifetime to Over the
turnstiles is especially bad and the final track is a very bland outro with spoken word from FJM.
Overall, despite the bumps, what stands out REALLY stands out and you're too giddy rgetting to hear
The Avalanches again to really care about the blemishes on the surface. rStand Outs: Because I'm
Me, Frankie Sinatra, Subways, Going Home, Colours, Harmony, Sunshine, rLight Up, Step KidsrBlow
Outs: The Noisy Eater, Park Music - The Wozard of Iz, Saturday Night Inside Out.
Edit: "it's okay but kind of underwhelming. Frankie Sinatra is one of the worst pieces of garbage i've
ever heard "

3.5 great | JigglyPDiddy | July 1st 16 | This fell off for me pretty hard. Initial hype had me going bonkers over this, but it really doesn't live up to SILY by any means imaginable. Sinatra is still an amazing jam, though. But overall, it's great. Just not anywhere near as legendary as SILY.

3.2 good | Erwann S. STAFF | August 26th 22 | A big sampledelic suite of warm, summery tunes that often tries to replicate Since I Left You without attaining the genius of its predecessor. Still a fun listen, but one that mostly goes to the background instead of grabbing you to its joyful world.

3.5 great | lz41 | July 24th 19 | For a while, it seems like "Wildflowers" has done the impossible: overcome more than a decade of hype to deliver an album better than "Since I Left You", full of a delightful, Disney-style vibrance with stronger and hookier songs. Then it just inexplicably runs out of gas and limps to the finish line in a sigh of deflating ambient noise. I like it a lot but it's a missed opportunity.

3.5 great | TheManMachine | July 30th 16 | 16 years since they left us and a copious amount of copycats later, this anxiously anticipated followup is less of the wild "what's next?!" ride from their first and more of a strikingly insouciant+sunny daydream; swimmingly fluxing from festival traffic to a bounce-house to the skies to the sea to a bit of the sublime beyond. Whimsy and frolic and psychedelia are in full effect -- and though it's not without its overly mild moments and middling disco-leans, the flow+detail+amazingly affable aura beg for basking; not to mention fashion a universe where getting pulled over with prohibited paraphernalia is nothin' but an amusing aside. Lighter compositions also make room for greater guest utilization: the highlights of which include Danny Brown with his "blunt after blunt after blunt after blunt" and fittingly wacky delivery, Dave Berman "drumming up a little weirdness" for the finale with his soft-spoken and poignant poetry, A.Dd+ killin' the bigots with kindness, and of course Biz Markie with his vociferous appetite and penchant for cereal.

3.5 great | dihstyle69 | July 8th 16 | it's obviously not the game changer that their last album was, and wildflower overtsays its welcome more than a little bit but the first half is very strong, showing that even after all these years, their identity is still very vivid. while far from a masterpiece, it's definitely worth a listen. 3.5

3.0 good | Cyan isn't a shade of blue. | July 7th 16 | I'm settling this with a weak 3.5, Stepkids is wonderful, Because I'm Me, Frankie Sinatra, and If
I Was a Folkstar were all really good, and Saturday Night Inside Out was decent for an Electricity
copycat. rThe rest ranges from good to boring to terrible like The Noisy Eater (I really liked it
at first for being crazy and weird, but that wore off eventually.)
