0.0 | MCFRepublic | February 8th 08 | Vanilla Ice has been slammed for a series of bad decisions and poor musical endeavors forced on him by his record label. Eventually, he went indie and produced a couple albums that were actually...good.
The first thing you will notice is that "Hard to Swallow" is VERY different from Ice's earlier works. Namely, the music isn't the pop he had formally performed. Gone are the samples and beats, and in their place is a sonic transformation courtesy of Ross Robinson.
"Hard to Swallow" is a very good rap-metal effort. Not a classic by any means, but certainly a lot better than it has been rated here. Coolest track here is "Too Cold", a rock remake of "Ice, Ice Baby" that is way better than the original.
Check it out.

4.0 excellent | metalspirit | June 24th 12 | Never thought I'd listen to Vanilla Ice. Although Nu Metal is a fairly hated genre of metal, I do enjoy listening to it, and this is pretty darned good as an album. I won't buy any of the other stuff he's made (maybe Bi-polar) but this is a very good album.

2.0 poor | Jared Floryan | December 15th 14 | (11/20/18): Rob Van Winkle's the type of cracker who wanted all the ladies to drop their zeroes and get with a hero; ironic given how people started treating him come the early 90s. With that said, attempting to distance himself from his former pop rap image, Ice worked with record producer Ross Robinson alongside a slew of session musicians in order to deliver Hard to Swallow. Containing an overtly nu-metal sound as well as much darker lyrical subjects to accompany this change in direction, there existed surprisingly decent instrumental passages scattered throughout the record's runtime. Piling onto this statement, Winkle's flow on the mic was also a slight step up from previous material. Still, between the painful lyricism, virtually non-existent charisma found within the vocal performances and uneventful composition choices, there's no sense in listening to the majority of what Hard to Swallow presented. Intriguing in concept plus well-intentioned, but executed ridiculously. Y'know, like Ice's "classic" phase! Light 2.

3.5 great | RangDang | May 8th 13 | Awesome album, tons of fun to blast in the car with. I found this today and wow it's great. It's simply good ole' nu-metal fun, nothing groundbreaking or amazing, but more so for chilling and saying "fuck yes."
