(10/18/18): My new kind of fear is In Flames churning out a country album afterwards, despite what Anders Friden has stated in the past. With that said, here lies Swedish metallers In Flames' twelfth studio release, one which ventures even further into the pop sphere while its "best" moments try too hard to recall A Sense of Purpose. If the Auto-Tunage and washed out production values don't turn customers off, then the uninspired musicianship, asinine lyrical content, and Anders' growing incompetence as a vocalist ought to do the trick. Sure, Battles is more energetic than Siren Charms, but this tidbit isn't reassuring when everything else that I felt went wrong with the record is taken into account. You could say that In Flames have... lost this battle. YEEEEEEAAAAAH!!!! I greatly doubt they're gonna win the war at this point either.

I recently revisited this after hearing it once and immediately giving it a 1.5 back around when it came out. Now let me preface, I got into metal well after In Flames rose to the top of melo-death, therefore I don't have the emotional attachment to *Clayman*-era In Flames that many longtime fans have. I have, however, heard all their records, and their trend increasingly farther into the realm of "selling out" is very apparent. That said, this has not been the same band of old for quite some time now, and you simply can't expect a bunch of dudes pushing 50 to be putting out records like their earlier releases anymore. So, in recognizing that In Flames has been shooting for arena-ready "pop metal' since *Reroute to Remain,* *Battles* becomes much more tolerable. While yes, its not interesting instrumentally nor lyrically, it is quite a leap up, as a whole, from *Siren Charms* and *Playground.* Radio rock in 2016-17 is very stale, boring, and not even catchy like it used to be, the latter of which being why *Battles* is actually a decent release. Some of the best hooks in the band's discography lie within this track listing, including the title track, "Through My Eyes," "Drained," and "The End." ...Yes, this band sold out, but that was a long time ago. And like it or not, this is above average for what mainstream rock radio gets these days. You simply cannot expect a band to make 10+ *Clayman*'s in a career.

Better than expected (I was expecting pretty bad). Better than Siren Charms. I think its time to just accept In Flames as
becoming pop. Makes sense. They're older dudes. They delivered some passionate music for a decent amount of years.
Now they're trying to speak to a younger/wider audience. I give them credit for producing catchy music. If you want to call
them sell outs, they sold out pretty good without really forsaking much integrity in my opinion. Good radio songs. Drained,
Like Sand, In my Room, and Battles are probably my favorite tracks.

Not the most unlistenable thing in the world, but so plain and boring with some cringey lyrics/tryhard choruses that make this quite poor. "Drained" isn't bad though, and "The End" would also be a decent listen if it wasn't for the oddly placed child choir in the chorus. 1 Bumps \| Bump

At this point they're an irrelevant band anyway, so no one should be paying much attention to them anymore. The first half of the album contains probably the strongest moments - if any exist here. Anders' growling prevails in songs such as 'Drained' and 'The End', while the melody in 'Before I Fall' marks a positive note. However, the attempt to win listeners over radio-friendly choruses is what will make many turn away once again. I keep only the self-titled track which summarises Battles. Bump

Listened to the whole album, fortunately enough haven't fell asleep while doing it, still pretty hollow stuff compared to Come Clarity. But this time I'm not disappointed, because if I was, that would mean that I still have faith in this band. Now they're just pissing on their good name's grave and they don't plan to stop it. 1,9/5.
