Return to the more aggresive style of production a la "Vanitas" is a big plus after "Desideratum"'s anemic tone. Overwhelmingly chaotic, even for AN standards, but this only increases the cathartic value of the melodic choruses and hard-hitting crescendos.

They keep opening up their style a little more on each album--it would seem--but their
experimentation with different styles doesn't seem to produce very satisfactory results. A lot of
their subtle shifts into melodic black/death metal come off as half-hearted emulations, their
Emperor/Ihsahn-esque clean vocals continue to sound both silly and bizarrely out of place, and
their influence on all-out blasting grind seems to continue to wane.
You can't knock a band for trying to expand past their roots, but when Anaal Nathrakh have always
been at their best when practicing teeth-gnashing black/grind, it's hard to not wish they'd
regress just a little.
tl;dr Not as evil as Constellation, not as brutal as Necro, and with songwriting far below Hell is
Empty. It's "whatever."

Anaal Nathrakh is a band I'm unsure about. And what I mean by that is, I love certain things and hate certain things about them, and I don't know what way my taste is going to swing in the future to either make me embrace or shun them. This is all compounded on The Whole Of The Law. I love the intensity on this record; it's a palatable rage and it's awesome, as are the hysterical harsh vocals. And yet, I hate the cheesy symphonic elements thrown in and the overblown clean vocals don't help things. It's not a bad thing to have some cheese on a record, but it's hard to take it at face value when a band has an approach that is ambiguous as to whether or not they actually mean any of this crap. I'd like to think they don't, but then again, I have no clue. They're definitely a frustrating band (though they do have a couple of albums where their good qualities far outdo the bad) and The Whole Of The Law is a similarly frustrating record.
