While it does not attain On the Impossible Past's level of greatness - few modern punk records actually can -, I remember being quite harsh with this one. Turns out After the Party is genuine, great, and genuinely great: lyrics are earnest and show that the bandmembers evolved from pissed-off young adults to reflective not-so-young-yet-not-old adults, and the songs, while not as catchy as their best ones, are all cool on their own rights. Ultimately, it's that consistency that allows this record to kinda have a chat with OtIP.

Reminded of my teen days. The album is thoroughly enjoyable but I had a sad realization while listening to the album is that I am now past Pop Punk Music.

I've been feeling for a couple of years now, that a band who sticks strictly to guitar, bass, drums and vocals is pretty much incapable of breaking new ground. Pretty much every combo of good sounding riffs has been played, and every melody sung. The reason I love the Menzingers so much, is that they seem to be fully aware of this, and they are not the only band out there that gets it. What sets them apart to me, is that they fully embrace this, and focus strictly on writing the best songs that they possibly can. The band's consistency is remarkable, and finally top the promise that they showed with OTIP. The musicianship has never been awe inspiring, but everything they play sounds good, and they seem allergic to writing imperfect melodies and hooks. I'm blown away at how they keep coming up with these vocal lines. Their style isn't too different from anything they've done before, but yet every song still has it's own personality. One complaint I've had about previous albums is that they can play some sappy boring ballads, but the slower song on here is probably the best they've done (Black Mass). Goddamn this is good. The way I see it, the band could go in two different directions going forward; making a boring "more mature" album that leans in that Springsteen/Gaslight territory, or delivering a more ambitious monster record with a focus on technicality. I think I'll still like them either way.

so, who said pop punk was dead? it might be, but the menzingers continue to appear out of nowhere to remember us that a piece of it is still well alive. relatable content (especially if you're in your 20's - like me - or 30's), passionate vocals, catchy melodies and memorable hooks all contribute to a very enjoyable body of work. 4.5
