Another one of those albums that has only grown in impact and stature over time. Guitarist Marcus Jidell gave them something their other (not bad) albums lack.

First listen = cool! Second listen = this is quite good. Subsequent listens = damn, this is really, really good! Sometimes it is appropriate to beat a dead horse: Soen marries elements of Tool and Opeth without sounding like a rip off of either. Personally, I almost feel like this is the direction Opeth should have went in during their ongoing Prog fantasy. This is certainly better than anything Opeth have done in their last few efforts, good on you Soen! Competent songwriting, dense chordal grooves, tribal bass, progginess without being like WE ARE PROGGGGGG, a great all around vocal performance, clean production and a memorable balance between heavy and melodic are things you will find on Lykaia. This album needs to go back into the rotation ASAP.

This is a good album, but it is way too lethargic for me. I liked the energy of the second release. At least they don't sound like they're ripping off Tool anymore.

Soen continue to find their own voice through Lykaia. With many of their contemporaries changing musical direction or halting progress altogether, it's encouraging to hear a new band provide an excellent contribution to progressive metal. Soen used to wear their influences on their sleeve, but have impressively been moving away from this trend and are sounding more original. Lykaia might sound like Opeth, Riverside, or even Pink Floyd at times, but maintains a distinct voice and stands as an impressive, well above average album for fans of Tool, Katatonia, and other similar groups.
