5.0 classic | nikolastzan | January 10th 17 | I always had great respect for those bands that manage to evolve musically, not just for the sake
of doing it, but as a physical consequence of the maturing of their members. Our dear friend
Daniel could have just as well written a Road Salt 3, or a Remedy Lane pt 2 and no one would ever
complain. Instead he chose to combine in a single record, certain aspects from everything he has
ever composed till now (as Trey Spencer comments above) and his toughts from his near-death
experience, utilizing probably for the first time in such extent the musical ideas that his -
proving to be- wingman Ragnar had to offer. The result? Having a listener like me constantly
asking himself: "IS THIS A NEW FUCKING MUSIC GENRE?"
Is this their magnum opus? I really dont know. Probably I will have to ask myself the same
question while listening their next work. What I do know is that Daniel, -better than anyone-
manages to connect his music with my feelings. Every lyric, every riff, every bassline is a
different sentiment for me, letting his music be the soundtrack of the journey to my mind
palace. I explore my anger in "Reasons", my sorrow and grief in "Meaningless", my search for
redemption in the self titled, my basic insticts in "On a Tuesday".
This comment is just a big thank you for everything he has offered to us, and a big apologize for
illegally downloading this masterpiece - I just couldnt resist. Hopefully it will
soon be another jewell in my cd library.

4.5 superb | Trey STAFF | December 12th 16 | I?m not going to lie, Pain of Salvation lost me after Remedy Lane. I was a big fan of the band?s overly emotive, quirky brand of progressive metal fronted by eccentric main man Daniel Gildenlöw from Entropia through Remedy Lane, but when they pushed the ?quirky? and ?progressive? further on Be I just couldn?t get into it. With every subsequent release, I would try to enjoy it, and fail. That finally changed with In The Passing Light of Day. During In The Passing Light of Day?s runtime, I hear the heaviness of Entropia, the epic-ness of Concrete Lake, the ultra-catchy melodies of Perfect Element, and the emotion of Remedy Lane? but this is better than all of those. If nothing else, those albums I couldn?t enjoy taught the band how to craft real songs that didn?t devolve into mindless wanking. All the youthful mistakes and Dream Theater meandering that would ruin songs in the past is gone? and that is definitely for the best.

4.0 excellent | TheSleepingSoul | January 4th 17 | I'm thinking this is better than anything since Be, and I was actually a fan of Scarsick and
the Road Salts. The lyrics, as ever, straddle a dangerous line between "genuinely moving and
meaningful" and "obnoxiously pretentious" - and somehow feel more ESL-ridden than previous
records - but there are a few emotional gut-punches that the band hasn't really managed to pull
off since Remedy Lane. Like Remedy Lane, it's a semi-autobiographical, non-chronological
concept album, and frequent lyrical reprises help tie together an otherwise somewhat disjointed
album.
While starting off strong with the emotional epic "On A Tuesday" and the haunting "Meaningless"
(a cover of a song from guitarist Ragnar Zolberg's band Sign), the album's first half is
inconsistent, dragged down by the 9-minute meandering and repetitive "Full Throttle Tribe".
Things pick up considerably in the second half though, and I consider everything from "Angels
of Broken Things" onward to be among Pain of Salvation's greatest work.
Special mention goes to "If This Is The End", with its first half being the weary, hopeless
musings of a dying man, which give way to a heavier second half with reprises of "On A Tuesday"
and "Meaningless", before finally spiraling into maddened, wordless screaming which calls to
mind Remedy Lane's underappreciated b-side "Thorn Clown". That's not even mentioning the 15-
minute title track, which you should experience for yourself.
As a fan of every era of the band, I won't call this a "return to form" as many are wont to do,
but this album proves that Pain of Salvation are still worthy of your attention, even after the
departure of half the band and its worrying five-year hiatus.
Recommended tracks: If This Is The End, Meaningless, Angels of Broken Things, In The Passing
Light Of Day
Skip: Full Throttle Tribe

4.5 superb | Voivod STAFF | February 16th 17 | Paraphrasing a quote from Confucius, the glory of this band and its main-man, lies not only in past triumphs, but also in rising when circumstances of entirely different context, conspire otherwise. And what a rise this is, as an essentially new band delivers an album that's up there with Entropia and Remedy Lane, although the blind emulation of mentioned predecessors, is avoided at large. Interested listeners are encouraged to track Pain of Salvation anno 2017 at the intersection of progressive rock lyricism with the atonal nihility of modern/nu metal. Favorite song: Full Throttle Vibe, for obvious and not so obvious reasons.
