Together with M&D, the best Immo since Unholy Cult. The exact opposite of the very disappointing Kingdoms, this album is full of variation, while keeping the base of massive, technical Immolation riffage well intact. An abundance of clean sections, whoch is new also makes for a nice refresher to a tried formula.

Atonement is definitely an entertaining death metal album, but there's not enough here for it to really step out above the crowd.

Death metal band Immolation can riff for sure but the production is kinda stale and the emotionally minimal gruff vocals are also fairly uninteresting. Still, "Atonement" was surprisingly not as bad as I'd expected it to be.

Wholly enjoyable in parts, somewhat frustrating in others. Immolation's songwriting on here is inconsistent, with songs feeling rather piecemeal, ending on strange transitions or, even worse, fading out. And a band 30 years into their career shouldn't have to resort to that.
Still, it IS better than Kingdom of Conspiracy, with some especially standout moments (When The Jackals Come's mid-section slowdown, Fostering the Divide's blistering solo work that transitions into one of the best tremolo riffs of their recent career). It's just a shame that this level of consistency doesn't permeate throughout.
