2.5 average | TheManMachine | April 21st 17 | "Cuz I've lost too many friends / So I'll say it again and again and again.." -- and that he does indeed do and do and do. Props on the upped production successfully sprinklin' in some more pretty+polish, but combined with Boucher's frank-as-fuck mope it gets to the point where it all feels so strained. Friend-of-suicider sympathizer I am, lyrically however this is nearly insufferable -- mourning tragedies and yourself is one thing, but using a chum's self-induced overdose to challenge the existence/intentions of god? Chronic oral obits for pals who've passed yet calling your animate ones mouth-breathers and threatening to disappear? Telling a concerned party to meet him in hell and then adding "It gets pretty hot where I live"? "This is the part where I'm a marathon runner and both my ankles are sprained"? And don't get me started on what's happening in heaven.

0.0 | Atari STAFF | March 19th 17 | At first, You're Not As _______ As You Think feels overwhelmingly dreary and hopeless: a record centered on nothing more than depression, self-pity, and death - but it's the little moments of optimism that give it so much depth and contrast. "Leave the Fan On" leaves an empty feeling in the gut, with lines of utter hopelessness barely escaping Boucher's lips in the most gorgeously restrained track of the band's career. Yet, every time "A Portrait Of" resurfaces one feels completely revitalized by its sweeping guitar-work and lines of encouragement: "I'm not trying to say it's easy/But I'm trying to say it's fine/I've still got your demons/And they're not gonna be leaving any time/Any time soon." Sorority Noise's latest manages to be emotionally draining, but completely relatable and uplifting at the same. Not since The Hotelier dropped Home, Like NoPlace Is There have I felt so moved by an album of this nature, and it feels good to say that.

3.0 good | Alabaster Jones | March 23rd 17 | On its own, You're Not As _____ As You Think is a pretty decent emo/indie rock record. It doesn't really do much for me other than remind me of better music than this, but it's good enough. When you add the context that this is the third project in about a year on which Cameron Boucher is still in mourning, it just sort of becomes really, really redundant. He dealt with this issue marvelously on Sorority Noise's last EP (which was bemoaned by people who ignored how good it actually was because it wasn't the Sorority Noise they knew before), and with the last Old Gray full-length, which provided even more context and backstory while addressing continued feelings of loss and grief. The point is this: all the music here was performed better by different bands (some of which are even referenced by Boucher on the record), and all the lyrics were already said much more eloquently and evocatively by Boucher himself on previous releases, which renders this record moot. It's not bad, but there's nothing here that hasn't been done better already, by both other bands and the band that released it.

2.0 poor | Gene Gol-Jonsson CONTRIBUTOR | June 29th 23 | Sorority Noise have at least three things going for them: the three opening tracks. Because right after that, an unholy slog of underwhelming, underwritten, overfuzzed tracks begins, where only occasional embryo of decent ideas or finesse slithers through.

2.8 good | Erwann S. STAFF | September 2nd 22 | Introspective emo that features everything from 2010s introspective emo: twinkly guitars, sadboi lyrics and atmosphere. woo! The biggest issue is the songwriting, with very few tracks standing out among their all-too-resembling peers.
