Freddie Gibb's rapping skills show plenty of prowess on You Only Live 2wice but just about every other aspect of the record is right next to or slightly above the rest of the competition. The beats, singing, hooks and general atmosphere of the album are all good but fail to really stand out like the flow, and lyrical skill Gibbs shows in his verses. His lyrics are a good mix of personal anecdotes and make-it-rich flair, he comes off as a natural. However, the sense of good-but-not-great is compounded even further as the record goes by because all eight of the tracks are all rather similar in structure and feeling. You Only Live 2wice starts off with pure gold in 20 Karat Jesus but never really finds that excellence again in the rest of the 30-minute playtime. The quality of the first five tracks is high but the last three are borderline B-sides.

For someone so prolific as Freddie Gibbs, you'd think four months in an Austrian prison would only marginally slow him down. But it's clear from the way he sounds speaking of it on You Only Live 2wice that it affected him more than he anticipated, despite being back on his feet with a suggested second coming of sorts. Prison didn't change him too much, as evident from his hungry and intense delivery on fantastic opener "20 Karat Jesus", which sets the tone both lyrically and in production, switching from a harder, dangerous vibe to a much more low-key, calmer one. The whole record is very consistent, but the bookends are the clear highlights, with "Homesick" divulging experiences about his time in overseas prison and his inability to be a father from inside the cell. The issue with it is that it's quite short, and feels like he may be holding back a bit, as if he plans to release bigger and better things soon. That said, it'll be great to hear that if that truly is the case, but You Only Live 2wice is still a wonderful sample of what's to come.

You Only Live 2wice is another high-quality release to Freddie Gibbs's consistent
discography. There's something for everyone here. The diverse collection has cuts that will appeal
to fans of Shadow of a Doubt and fans of Pinata. Freddie Gibbs is back, and
he's still got it. With multiple collaborations with Madlib (a sequel to Pinata) and
Curren$y announced, the man still has a lot of upcoming material for people who found this release
too short. For me, however, You Only Live 2wice is a great album that covers more ground in
eight tracks than many hip-hop releases do in over 20.

my only gripe with this album is that it's way too short and it's not really up to par with pinata and shadow of a doubt. i know there is more gibbs coming on its way tho and this shit defin keeps you excited for more. this one serves solely for us to know where gibbs was in the past year, where he is now and where he wishes to be in the future. 3.5+
